Anectodes of an Entaglement

The sound of a g*n woke Jack from his daze. God, how much he hated that sound.   The sound of grenades, bullets flying everywhere, and very occasionally a stupid soldier getting himself killed were occurring and reoccurring all around him.   The bolt-action rifle was loaded again.   “Jack, can you smell that?” asked his companion.   She had the stupid smile of arrogance.   “All I smell is death, gunpowder and stupidity”   She gave him a grin.   “Ah yes, the smell of rebellion”   He replied with a crooked grin of his own.   He readjusted his helmet, breathed out, and continued shooting again.    They were very close to the edge now, and it would be hard to make a proper escape.   Some of the people that joined the group had become Hunters, while others remained human, just like Jack. But the jumping to their deaths did not discriminate.  A few more shots and he entered cover again.   She kept laughing maniacally.   If only our friendlies knew how insane this chick is, he thought.  He was her second in command, and not even he knows why he kept following her in her missions.   Every plan was madness, if it was not a suicide mission it would not be worth it for her. Many of the times, he thought that she didn’t really care about the ideals she talked about.    They kept shooting, staying right behind a large rock.   Most of their rag-tag group of soldiers were either dead or jumping to their deaths.   “I think our only option is to jump” Jack called out.   “Don’t be such a puss. Everyone knows that the heroes always live until the very end.”   And so, their enemies came closer to their position. They now surrounded them, the pair being the only two that seemed alive and near the edge.   “When I see you in hell, I am surely going to choke you to death,” Jack told her.   “Kinky, but I’m not really interested. I’m more of a doing the choking myself”   “It’s funny that you think that I would be interested”   She screamed at the soldiers and Hunters that they surrendered, and to stop shooting.    After she was heard, she tossed her rifle to the side, and stood on top of the rock, after getting boosted up by Jack.    “Hear me, you poor peasants, but do not misunderstand me. I call you poor because you do not try to ascend from the gutter. And, I call you peasants because you serve a king and that is where they have put you”   The soldiers stood, unmoving. They were unsure what to do. They kept their unwavering attention on her.  “Why did you kill all your friends, idiots. You are not killing the enemy; you are killing your own brothers. Your friends, your comrades, your fellow humanity. And while we kill each other, they boost their own glory and greatness. And, as such-”   She was interrupted by a bullet.    Jack had sneaked into the group of soldiers that were too busy looking at the girl and had joined them.  He had silently climbed the side of the peak and was now in the group of soldiers.   “Search the area, if you find any of them, you have orders to shoot on sight. After that, pile up the bodies, we are going to burn them all. Leave no evidence of any rebellious bastards” Jack told the men. He started heading towards the girl he had just shot.   “Being shot at by you is the hottest new experience I have ever had” she told him.   “Just shut up, before you blow our cover.” He had started to carry her like a princess, slowly heading to the portal.   “Sir why are you heading towards the portal with that body,” asked a nearby soldier.   He had an intelligent gleam in his eyes. His long black hair was poking out of his helmet.  “And who are you to question orders from a superior cadet?” asked Jack.   “Sir, to be frank, I am not questioning anyone. Or, at least, anyone that belongs in the army”   “s**t”   “No need to fret. I want to join. I’ve always wanted to join. This place is a f*****g shitshow.”   “Then keep going with me, like you were a bodyguard. Keep going, follow my pace, and do not say or ask any questions. We are going to head towards command” said Jack.   The soldier did not say anything.   That was until the girl spoke.   “Say, what’s your name?”   The soldier did not say anything, afraid of angering the wrong person.   “You can answer. She is above me in the chain of command, after all” said Jack.   “My name is Marcus”   “Nice to meet ya kid, the name is Zoe”
