Chapter 1
The rising sun over the horizon, causing a golden glow on the sprawling forest surrounding the pack’s territory. Selena stood at the training grounds, her dark hair pulled downward into a braid. The morning air carried the sounds of sparring wolves, the clang of wooden practice swords, and sharp barks of instruction. Selena’s eyes swept across the training ground taking note of their form, strength, and teamwork. She wasn’t just the alpha’s daughter; she was expected to be a leader in her own right time. “Watch your stand Theo,” Selena called out. Her voice carried authority but lacked hardness. “If you keep leaning forward like that, you’ll leave your back exposed.” Theo straightened immediately, blushing with embarrassment. “Yes, Selena. Sorry!” “Don’t apologize. Just take note.” She offered a small smile before moving to the next pair of sparring wolves. Closeby, an argument started between two young wolves. Selena sighed and approached them. “What’s going on here?” she asked, her tone calm but firm. “He’s not fighting back!” one of the wolves growled, staring hard at his partner. “How am I supposed to improve if he won’t take this seriously?” “I’m not holding back,” the other protested. “I just don’t want to hurt you!” Selena raised her hand, shutting them up. “Training isn’t just about winning alone. It’s about learning and building trust. If you’re holding back, you’re not helping your partner grow. And if you’re too aggressive, you’re risking injury. Balance is key.” The wolves nodded in agreement, their anger dissipating. Selena patted them on the shoulders before stepping back. The alpha’s cabin is postioned at the heart of the pack’s territory, a robust structure of wood and stone that appears with authority. Inside, Selena and her father, Alpha Gregory, shared a quiet breakfast. The smell of freshly baked bread and smoked meat filled the air, but the conversation was anything but light. “You handled the training well this morning,” Gregory said, breaking the silence. His sharp red eyes was locked on Selena. “But you need to remember that the pack doesn’t just need a fighter, They need a leader.” Selena nodded, keeping her frustration to herself. “I know, Father. I’m doing my best.” “Your best isn’t good enough if you don’t secure alliances,” Gregory continued. “The future of this pack depends on unity, and unity means finding a strong mate.” Selena’s jaw tightened. “I’m only 21 tomorrow. I still have time to figure this out.” Gregory rested back in his chair, his expression stern. “Time is a luxury we don’t have, Selena. Rogues are becoming stronger, and alliances are fragile. You need to think beyond yourself.” Selena didn’t respond, but instead focusing on her plate. She knew arguing with her father was pointless. The tense breakfast was cut short by a scout bursting through the cabin door, panting from exertion. His clothes were torn, and his face was pale. “Alpha Gregory,” the scout gasped. “Rogue activity near the southern border. Tracks were found, a group of five or six, possibly more.” Gregory’s expression changed. “Assemble a patrol immediately. I’ll lead the investigation myself.” Selena stood. “Let me come with you.” “No,” Gregory responded sharply. “You’re staying here.” “But—” “No arguments, Selena. Your place is here, ensuring the pack is safe in my absence.” Selena clenched her fists but nodded. “Yes, Father.” As Gregory and the scout left, Selena’s mind raced. She couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the rogue attacks than her father was telling her. On the outskirts of the territory, Darian laid low behind a thicket of bushes. His sharp senses picked up every movement and sound. He’d been living among the pack for weeks now, posing as a low-ranking worker, but he’d yet to find the traitor he was hunting. His eyes followed Selena as she moved through the training grounds. She was elegant, commanding, and undeniably beautiful. But Darian shook off the thought. He wasn’t here to get involved. Stay focused. She’s not your objective. The traitor is close. Find them, expose them, and move on. Darian shifted his position, careful not to draw any attention. He couldn’t risk to be discovered— not yet. At nightfall, Selena walked through the perimeter of the training grounds, the moonlight casting a silvery glow over the clearing. The day’s events weighed heavily on her mind. Her father’s expectations, the rogue threat, and the uncertainty of her future all twisted in her thoughts. What if I don’t find my mate tomorrow? Or, what if I do and it changes everything? A disturbance in the bushes made her stop. Her sharp eyes scanned through the darkness, but she saw nothing. Still, the feeling of being watched lingered. “Hello?” she called out. Her voice was steady, but her heart raced. No response. Shaking her head, she continued her walk, unaware that Darian watched her from the shadows, his expression unpredictable.
