01:Special transfer
The bustling city of Southern California, with its rustling sounds, indicates that it is a Monday. Detective Jean rushed into the police station after receiving an urgent message from the chief of their division. As she approached the entrance to his office, she took a deep breath and gently pushed the door open with a creak. As she entered the room, her gaze scanned the surroundings. The faint aroma of coffee seeped into her nostrils. Her gaze then settled on the figure in front of her, who was sitting in a chair behind a desk. "Good morning, Chief," she said, her tone neutral but poised with curiosity. After a brief pause, Chief Zack smiled as he looked up from his laptop. "Thank you for getting here so quickly, Detective Jean." "It is my pleasure." She responded, her mind racing with jumbled ideas. Chief Zack nodded in response to her response and arched his neck, pulling out a brown folder and opening it; his eyes scanned the files carefully arranged in the folder as if attempting to read something. His eyes lit up slightly as he slowly pulled out a file and stretched it forward to Jean, who looked at him with complete puzzlement. But she composed herself with a slight stretch and a smile. She collected the file and gently turned it open; her eyes widened in surprise as she got a glimpse of the context. She halted her breath a little and scratched her eyes. She viewed the file again and muttered the topic sentence, " A special transfer on the grounds of apprehending SIN, the tormentor of New York City." "I do not understand what this is all about, Chief;" She stuttered, fixing her gaze on Chief Zack, who had an expressionless face. He cleared his throat and sat upright, " You are getting transferred to New York City on a special request, and you are to capture SIN, the famous crime lord, and torment "I don't think I can leave Southern California, at least not now. I started my career here. Chief, my life is here. My cases are here. Are you asking me to drop everything to chase a ghost in New York? Sin is a myth, not a suspect." "I know all of this, Jean; I can not possibly see danger and insist on your entry. I was late prosecutor Stevens best teammate, I mean your Dad's teammate, and I will always want the best for you," Chief Zack said quietly enough to persuade her. " If you can apprehend him, you will be promoted to tactical team leader; the rewards are enticing, Jean. This is the best thing that can happen to you in your entire detective career," Chief Zack said, moving towards the window. "And what if I fail to capture him, losing both my life and my career?" Jean's question hung in the air, causing Chief Zack to drop his jaw as she fixed her gaze on him. He cleared his throat, attempting to shake off the shock. "What if we assigned two male detectives to you?" he inquired. "They will provide assistance and act as direct informants for us." Jean's slight smile faded, her gaze remaining fixed on Chief Zack's. "Two male assistants?" Her eyelashes fluttered in confusion, unable to pinpoint his intentions. Chief Zack nodded, his expression unreadable as he returned to his seat and sat down. " It is a precautionary measure. We must ensure safety and communication, as this will aid us in providing you with the assistance you require. " The air became thick with tension as Jean tried to process the unexpected proposal. Chief Zack's gaze shifted to her, his eyes staring into hers as if daring her to refuse. The tension was broken by her phone blaring in her pocket; the blares jolted her out of her reverie. She raised her head up to ask for permission and was met with a nod from Chief Zack. Slowly, she inserted her hands into her pockets and removed the phone. Her eyes widened in confusion as she saw the message notifications. Her steady breaths became slower, and each inhalation felt like torture. "What is it, Jean?" Chief Zack inquired, clicking several keys on his keyboard. "I am so sorry, sir." " I'm so sorry, sir. I know I'm not meant to leave, but please, permit me, sir. " She begged and hurried out of his office, her legs trembling as she left the police station. She quickly flagged down a cab and rushed inside as soon as the car arrived. Sweat beads form on her temples and roll down her neck and body. Despite repeated warnings and doubts, she refused to succumb to her instincts. She had regretful thoughts. "I should keep the judgmental acts and make a confirmation; I know he can not do that to me." She was still trying to justify his actions, her jaw clenching slowly as she closed her eyes, attempting to take a chill pill and avoid giving in to the anxiety that threatened to pull her in. The cab came to a sudden halt, jolting her out. She slowly opened her eyes and pulled out some bills from her bag to pay as she opened the door to exit. The cab driver, a gritty-looking man with a thick beard, took the money from her without saying anything. His gaze shifted to the rearview mirror, and he glanced at her before starting the engine to drive away. Jean took a deep breath, trying to remain calm and not be overwhelmed by her emotions. Her gaze darted around and crossed to the area's housing space. She began fidgeting gradually, her fist clenching and her fingers piercing into her palm. Each step she takes feels like it brings her closer to her doom, which she refuses to accept. Another blaring from her phone in her pocket shattered her calm. She dashed towards the door and twisted the doorknob, which opened freely, increasing her chances of believing the message sent to her earlier. Even in his dreams, Dan's door will always be locked. She slowly pushed the door with a little force, and with a creak, its doors opened wide. As she stepped inside, her eyes scanned the room for any signs of confirmation. Her eyes caught a glimpse of female clothing that did not resemble her own. Her heart sank as she kept her gaze fixed on the piece of clothing. It was a purple silk gown. She felt a wave of betrayal wash over her, and her legs trembled as she stumbled forward. Her shaking steps caused her head to vibrate in perfect rhythm. Her pulse quickened as she walked closer to his room; her gaze fell on a pair of high heels on the floor beside the curved passage to the balcony. Her vision blurred as she stared at the high heel, her mind racing with possibilities and ideas. The defensive wall of trust she had built was collapsing right in front of her. Her legs tremble underneath, threatening to fall. As Jean approached Dan's bedroom door, she could hear moans and the slapping sounds of sweaty skin, followed by groans from Dan. A sharp, stabbing feeling in her heart tore her emotions apart; the level of infidelity she never imagined she would experience was unfolding right in front of her eyes. With heavy breathing and trembling hands, she staggered closer to the door, the sounds becoming louder, more intense, and heartbreaking. "I love the way you treat me like a f*****g b***h; I'm... Oh!!! f**k," she heard, followed by a growl of pleasure. Jean twisted the knob. It gave way. The air inside smelled of stale sweat and a perfume that wasn't hers. On the bed, a tangle of limbs shifted. Dan. And a woman who was definitely not his cousin. Her eyes widened in terror, and her whole body shook with pain as she glared at them.
