**MARA'S POV**
Serena Vale walked in and two girls followed behind her. They stopped at the doorway and said nothing, just standing there like pieces of furniture.
Serena looked around the room. She looked at my suitcase on the floor. My clothes folded on the desk. My worn shoes by the door. She then looked at Petra and me.
Her expression didn't change through any of it.
She walked to the only chair in the room and sat down without asking. Then she crossed her legs and looked at me like she had all the time in the world.
"You're Mara?"
"Yes," I replied as politely as I could.
"I'm Serena." She glanced around the room one more time then settled her eyes back on me. "I run this dormitory. Every new girl comes to see me on their first day." Another pause. "You didn't come."
"Well I did, you were just too busy f*****g my boyfriend to notice."
Even though I'd said I'll control myself since these people could kill me anytime, I just couldn't hold myself in this situation.
A short and unbothered laugh came out of her mouth, then— "Your boyfriend. You don't really think that, do you?"
I said nothing.
"Ethan belongs to no one. Least of all, a human girl with a scholarship she doesn't understand." Her eyes landed on me coldly. "You should be grateful he got you here in one piece."
I felt my jaw tighten but I still kept my mouth shut.
"But darling. That's still no excuse. I came to you instead. Consider yourself lucky since I don't usually make the trip. But that won't exempt you from punishment."
I didn't say anything. I was scared that if I opened my mouth again, I might just spout something that'll get me killed on the spot.
"Punishment," I repeated before I could stop myself. "For what exactly?"
"For making me wait," she said simply. "Everything here runs on respect. You should know that."
I shrugged, clenching my fists as hard as I could. "I just arrived today."
"I'm aware." She looked at me flatly. "That's the only reason this is a conversation and not something else."
I remained quiet, my nails piercing into my palms.
"There are rules in this dormitory. I don't repeat them so pay attention. You don't touch anything that belongs to someone above your rank, especially me. You don't sit at tables that aren't yours at mealtimes. You don't speak in spaces where you haven't been invited to speak." She tilted her head slightly, then continued. "You keep to yourself, you stay out of things that don't concern you, and you don't draw attention to yourself. I'm the only one allowed to gather attention."
How narcissistic.
"Understood," I nodded.
She looked at me like the word irritated her. "You're very unbothered for someone who just arrived today."
"I'm just tired. It's been a long day. Don't worry, I fully understand you."
"Do you?" she raised a brow. "Because most girls in your position would at least have the sense to look worried."
"Would that change anything?" I asked, raising a brow.
"No, it wouldn't."
"Then why waste the energy?"
One of the girls behind her shifted, but Serena's eyes stayed on me.
"You have a lot to say for someone with nothing to back it up," she growled slightly, eyes squinting.
"I'm not saying much. I'm just answering your questions."
She looked at me slowly. Head to foot. The way she had done when she first walked in, like she was evaluating me.
This was really starting to feel like a job interview.
"What exactly do you have going on? You have no great bloodline, no wolf, no superpowers. At least the last few humans had something special about them. You're just… you.”
"I don't know either. I've been asking myself the same thing since I arrived."
She stared at me for a long moment. Then she smiled but it didn't reach her eyes.
"I almost like you. Almost. So don't get cocky.”
Was her liking me really something to be cocky about?
She uncrossed her legs and leaned forward slightly. "Let me be straightforward with you Mara because I think it saves time. You have two options in this academy. You can stay small, stay quiet, stay out of things that don't concern you and finish your year without any trouble." She paused, admiring her red polished nails, then continued. "Or you can make yourself interesting. Draw attention. Give people, and me a reason to look at you."
I tilted my head slightly, waiting for her to finish her sentence.
Her voice stayed flat. "Then die like a f*****g pig that you are."
"I'm not trying to be interesting," I responded, stomach tightening. "I just want to get through the year."
"Good, then we won't have a problem."
She stood up, turning toward the door and her two girls moved aside immediately. She was almost out when she suddenly stopped and turned her head around.
"One more thing. Those four men you bumped into earlier, stay away from them."
I said nothing.
"I'm not asking. I'm simply telling you."
"And if I don't?"
"You die. At least that's what happened to the last two humans."
With that, she left, the door clicking shut behind her.
The room went very quiet.
I turned to Petra.
"Where's the bathroom?" I asked.
"You're not going to ask anything concerning what Serena just said?"
"No. It'll probably only make me more scared. So please, where's the bathroom?"
Petra looked up from her book. "Down the corridor, turn left then right. Big wooden door."
I grabbed my towel and toiletries and stood up.
"It's shared by the way," she added.
I stopped. "Shared how."
"Both genders use it," she explained.
I turned and looked at her. "So boys and girls share one bathroom. Isn't that disgusting?"
"Nobody complained, plus there are stalls," she pointed out. "It's not that serious."
"It's a little serious."
"Mara." She looked at me over her book. "You watched your boyfriend turn into a wolf today. A shared bathroom should be the least of your concerns right now."
