Chapter 2: College Uproar
Sylvia's pov.
My mate was… Isaac Gallagher.
The alpha’s son.
My heart shuddered in fear as I realised what a misfortune I had procured in the moon goddesses eyes.
I had heard of mates, how when you first meet them, it's like your world is turned upside down, and burning yet, in a good way, their scent would surround you like a blanket of protection.
But yet, as I stared into Isaac's blue orbs, there was none of those feelings. What I felt was dread— a terror that rumbled inside of me that this was only going to end badly.
Everyone else was surprised, especially Eve, “There's no way she can be your mate Isaac, what the hell?” Although she said this, there was anger lying underneath her tone.
A woman stood beside Isaac, one I had never seen before, with an upturned smile, she walked past as if none of this was her business, and honestly, it wasn't.
Eve ran over towards Isaac, holding him by his hands but Isaac pushed her off gently, walking towards me while I took a step back and averted my gaze.
“I, Isaac Gallagher, reject you, Sylvia Withmore as my mate." It was a public humiliation as the remainder of my world came crashing down.
Not that I had any other hopes of finding a mate before, well at least that was what I thought until I felt the strings disappear.
It was like a part of me was destroyed that night, “Why?” I whispered, holding the tears and trying to be strong, but my voice trembled in the end.
“You don't really expect me to be mates to a traitor's spawn like you, do you?”
A single tear rolled down the side of my face as he continued.
“To be mated to someone who hasn't even shifted, a weak omega.”
Every word was like a dagger that slowly pierced my heart each time he opened his mouth.
Isaac scoffed, “To someone who might just be cursed by the moon goddess herself, Just like her mother.”
“MY MOTHER IS NOT CURSED!” I reacted in instinct and anger through gritted teeth. But the instant it was out, I regretted my decision and feared that I might face repercussions.
This seems to amuse Isaac and the others, “It's only a matter of time before she kicks the bucket and do us all a favour by taking her curse with her before it gets contagious.”
My knuckles went tighter by my side, he was meant to be my mate, he was meant to stand with me when everyone else didn't.
What was worse was he was meant to be my best friend, at least that was a long time ago when we were younger, he was the Alpha to be and I was going to be his beta, just the way my father was.
That was until an incident happened and my father was accused of a strike I knew he didn't commit, yet everyone believes he did.
That he had betrayed us to the humans, hence, why he was executed.
Ever since then, our lives had dwindled,we were sidelined, demoted and treated as s**t.
When Isaac turned 20, he relocated and never returned, that was until today.
Isaac cast one last disdainful look, “You should just end up in a ditch like her,” he cursed before brushing past me and walking away.
My gut wretched, I wanted to scream, to throw up, to pull at my hair. I wanted to give up, take his advice by jumping off a f*****g cliff.
But the little hand I held behind me pulled me back from the deep depths of my mind, I still had Alfie and my mother, if I were to die, there wouldn't be anyone taking care of them.
Bottling it all in once again, just like I had done in the past, I wiped the tears from my face, at the same time, a voice from above caught my attention.
“That's enough,” the pressure weighed down on me rather hard.
Alpha Jonathan stood at the patio above, I didn't know how long, but it seemed he had been watching from above for quite a while I guessed.
Alpha Jonathan's hard gaze scanned across the room before he rounded the patio and slowly descended the steps, “I thought you were coming in tomorrow, why the sudden change?” He greeted the woman first, “Miss prudence.”
“We thought it best to return earlier, it sounded urgent when you called,” Isaac responded.
“I'm really sorry that you have to rush on my behalf, and also that you have to see this mess, Sylvia here was supposed to clean it up before your arrival,” one hard look from the alpha had me shaking as I recoiled.
So that's what they wanted me to do?
Alpha Jonathan continued, “But you are right, it is urgent, the humans have grown suspicious, they've been sending more of their men over, hence why we have been on a curfew for the past few weeks.”
The surrounding members seemed to cast a wary look my way, “It's been decided that you and some others would be attending college... with the humans.”
There was an uproar in the room, some of them didn't seem to agree with this decision.
“Everything would be explained in time, but for now, everyone should prepare, there would be a few changes around here.”
Alpha Jonathan came to a stop in front of me, “You would also be joining them, if I find out that you have something to do with this...”
He left with his threat hanging…
