Chapter 8: The Transformation Begins

659 Words
The days after Lucian's revelation blurred into a haze of confusion and desire that seemed to consume every waking moment, with the rain in Evergreen continuing its relentless assault on the windows and roofs, mirroring the storm raging inside me as I struggled to come to terms with the truth that the two men who had captured my heart were not human at all, but creatures from legends — Lucian a vampire with cold eternity in his veins, and Kai a werewolf with wild fire in his blood, both pulling me into a world I never knew existed, a world that was now claiming me as its own. School became almost unbearable, the hallways filled with whispers and stares that I imagined were about me, though I knew they were just the normal gossip of a small town, but every glance from Lucian in the distance sent chills down my spine, his golden eyes holding a hunger that made my body respond in ways I couldn't control, while Kai's warm smiles and casual touches in the cafeteria ignited a heat that made me forget the cold, forget the danger, forget that my life was changing in ways I couldn't yet understand. One evening, after a day where the tension between the three of us had been palpable — Lucian watching from the shadows as Kai walked me to my locker, his hand on my lower back in a way that felt both protective and possessive — Kai drove me to the edge of the forest, the truck rumbling over the wet roads, rain streaking the windows like tears, and as he parked in a secluded spot surrounded by towering trees that seemed to whisper secrets in the wind, he turned to me with eyes that glowed faintly in the dim light, his voice low and rough as he confessed, "Bella, I can't stay away from you, even knowing what he is, even knowing the risk, because you feel like the missing part of me." His kiss was immediate, deep and desperate, his warm hands sliding under my jacket, tracing the curves of my body with a familiarity that made my breath catch, and as we moved to the back seat, clothes coming off in frantic haste, his mouth on my neck, biting just enough to mark without breaking skin, pleasure building in waves that crashed over me until I was gasping his name, lost in the heat of him, the wildness that made me feel alive in a way Lucian 's cold touch never could. We lay tangled after, his arm around me, his breath hot on my skin, and he whispered promises of protection, of a life together away from the vampires, but even as I nodded, my mind drifted to Lucian, to the cold fire of his bite, to the way his eyes promised eternity rather than just passion, and the guilt twisted in my stomach like a knife, because I loved them both, in different ways that tore me apart. That night, the pain started. Sharp. Burning. In my veins. I woke screaming. Dad rushed in, worried. "Fever," I lied. He gave me medicine. But it didn't help. The transformation. Lucian's bite. The blood changing. I called him. He came. Through the window. Cold hand on my forehead. "It's beginning." "What?" "The change." "To vampire?" He nodded. Pain surged. I cried out. He held me. Kissed me. Cold lips soothing the fire. His fangs in my neck — gentle. Drank. Then gave his blood. Wrist to my lips. I drank. Power surged. Pain eased. Pleasure replaced. The bond complete. I slept. Woke stronger. Eyes sensitive to light. Hunger new. For blood. Kai called. I didn't answer. The human girl dying. The vampire rising. The choice made. Or forced. The war between vampire and werewolf. Ignited by my transformation. The love triangle broken. Or eternal. The rain stopped for the first time. And my new life began.
