Chapter Seven: The War Breathes

722 Words
The first strike came before sunrise. Not loud. Not chaotic. Quiet. Too quiet. Kael felt it before the pack did. A shift in the air. A pressure. Like the land itself had taken a breath—and refused to exhale. He stood at the center of the territory, eyes scanning the darkness beyond the trees. They were close. Too close. --- “Positions!” Kael’s voice cut through the stillness. The pack moved instantly. Trained. Fast. But there was something different in their movements now. Unease. Fear. Even if they didn’t say it— They felt it too. This wasn’t a normal attack. --- Lyra stood slightly behind the group. Watching. Learning. Her eyes moved between the wolves. The way they shifted. The way they listened. The way they responded to him. Kael Draven didn’t ask for obedience. He commanded it. And they gave it. --- “Stay back,” Ronan said quietly as he passed her. Lyra didn’t respond. Didn’t move. She simply watched. --- Then— The first enemy appeared. A shadow. Then another. And another. Emerging from the trees like something pulled from the dark itself. Eyes glowing. Bodies tense. Ready. --- Kael stepped forward. Alone. He didn’t call for backup. He didn’t hesitate. The ground beneath him seemed to shift as he moved. “Cross this line,” he said calmly, “and you die.” The wolves didn’t stop. They attacked. --- The moment they crossed— Kael moved. Fast. Precise. Deadly. There was no wasted motion. No hesitation. A strike. A snap. A fall. Another. The battlefield erupted instantly. Growls. Claws. Blood. The ground beneath them began to stain once again. --- Lyra watched. Her breathing slowed. Her eyes tracked Kael’s movements. The way he fought wasn’t just strength. It was control. Absolute. Unrelenting. But something else lingered beneath it. Something she could feel. Even from here. --- The mark. She could feel it. Responding. --- One of the attackers broke from the fight. Fast. Heading straight toward the center. Toward her. --- Lyra didn’t move. Didn’t run. Didn’t scream. She simply watched as the wolf charged. Closer. Closer. --- “Behind you!” Ronan shouted. --- But Lyra didn’t turn. She lifted her hand. Slow. Controlled. And as the wolf lunged— She stepped forward. --- Kael saw it. In the middle of battle. Time slowed. For just a second. --- Lyra raised her hand. And touched the attacker’s chest. --- The wolf froze. Mid-motion. Completely still. Like something had locked its body in place. Its eyes widened. Confusion. Fear. Then— Pain. --- The wolf collapsed. Hard. Unmoving. --- Silence hit that part of the battlefield. For a fraction of a second. --- Kael stopped. His eyes locked on her. What did she just do? --- But the moment broke quickly. More enemies surged forward. The fight resumed. --- But something had changed. Kael felt it. Deep in his chest. The mark pulsed. Stronger. Sharper. --- He moved again. Faster now. But his attention kept drifting back. To her. To what she had done. --- Lyra stood still. Watching. Breathing steady. Unshaken. But her fingers trembled slightly. Not from fear. From the echo of what she felt. --- Connection. --- Something inside her had responded. Not instinct. Not training. Something else. --- Kael finished off the last of the immediate attackers. Silence returned. But not peace. Never peace. --- The pack regrouped. Breathing heavy. Blood staining the ground. Victory. But costly. --- Kael stood at the center once more. Chest rising. Eyes sharp. Scanning. Calculating. --- Then— He turned. And walked toward her. --- Lyra didn’t move. Didn’t look away. Didn’t lower her gaze. She stood there. Waiting. --- Kael stopped in front of her. Close. Too close. --- “You should have moved,” he said. Lyra looked at him. Then tilted her head slightly. As if asking— Why? --- Kael’s expression darkened. “You’re not meant to fight.” She didn’t respond. But her gaze didn’t waver. --- A beat of silence passed. --- Then Kael spoke again. Lower this time. “…You’re becoming a problem.” --- Lyra blinked once. Then slowly— She took a small step closer. --- The mark burned. --- Kael’s breath tightened. --- And for the first time— He didn’t step back. ---
