Chapter 3 – It’s about time, now shush!
Jaspers POV
I awoke on my side in a dark room. It was wooden and very minimalist, only a bed and a set of drawers was in it that I could see. Dark curtains covered the only window which blocked out any light. I tried to turn to see the other side of the room, but everything ached. I cried out, and suddenly realized I hadn’t moaned like a wolf but had formed actual words.
“Can I talk?” I asked cautiously and was excited to hear my own voice. After 4 long years, I had finally transformed back into a human.
I finally got the strength. Onyx replied, but he sounded weaker than before.
Are you ok? I asked him and I felt him agree in my head but not answer.
The door to the room burst open behind me and, try as I might, I couldn’t turn around to see who it was. I must admit, terror took over my body for a second. Who had found me? And did they know I was a werewolf?
“Jasper?” The voice whispered and I knew I was safe.
“Tracker?” I asked, still unable to move without everything hurting. “What happened?”
“You finally transformed back.” He shrugged, heading round to face me. I looked at him with my human eyes and he grimaced. “Stop that!” he said gruffly. I hadn’t realised it but I had started tearing up. I gulped back the tears, which were tears of happiness, and smiled at him. I forgot that Tracker was 2 years older than me, making him 13 and a little more mature. I wanted to stay his friend, especially now I was a human again. Tracker began talking about his wolf and how he had finally transformed but his mother didn’t seem to care and some other things when I finally realised something. My breathing turned shallow, and I could see spots in my vision. I wasn’t getting enough air into my lungs and started choking slightly as tears stung my eyes.
“What's wrong” Tracker asked, suddenly at my side, arms at the ready to-do whatever he could.
“Where…do…I…go? What…do… I… do… now?” I managed to choke out in my panic. Tracker didn’t seem to understand, but Onyx did.
We stay with Ivy. He said matter-of-factly.
“Can’t…werewolf!” I shouted, not realising I was talking in my human voice. Tracker then seemed to realise.
“Can’t you shift back and forth now?” He asked.
We can. Onyx replied to him even though Tracker couldn’t hear. I nodded slightly at Tracker.
“OK, so you can still live with Ivy whilst we find your parents or pack. Calm down, OK?” He said with a forced smile on his face. I knew the smile was to try and make me calm down because Tracker never smiled. Onyx was saying the same things in my head. That I could live with Ivy, attend school whilst she was at school and get to know her then maybe one day, we can tell her the truth. My breathing began to calm down, and I nodded in agreement with what they were both saying. My body was aching less now, and I sat up in bed, swinging my legs off to the side. It felt bizarre to have to walk on two legs again, but I’d do it, even if it killed me.
“Good, it’s about time, now shush, my mother wouldn’t be happy if she knew you were here.”
Ivys POV
Where, on earth, was Jasper? And Tracker? Jasper always came to play with us for lunch, even though I knew deep down he only did it to spend time with me. We'd spent the last 4 years together, never being apart. Dad had tried his hardest to get me to free him, but there was something special about him. I knew wolves were extremely rare where we lived, but that didn’t mean we didn’t have them. So, for one to be on its own, and so young, it must have been abandoned by its parents. I didn’t want to release him to be a lone wolf when he clearly enjoyed being around others.
I was stood in the playground rubbing my arms, even though it wasn’t cold, the complete opposite actually, I had a chill that struck me to the core.
Tracker not being here either was bizarre. Although he hadn’t been at school long, probably a year or so, he had always been around me, Jasper and Jesse. He was quiet and never smiled, but he clearly liked Jasper and Jasper seemed to enjoy his company a lot more than anyone else’s too. We lived in an extremely small village, so it was weird when Tracker started school out of nowhere and so late. He never spoke about anything from before he came here. No one knew where he lived or who his parents were. We only knew he was 3 years older than us and at the end of this year he would be changing schools to a larger one that had a tonne more kids. He should actually have started there this year, but there was some confusion on his previous schooling record, so he got kept behind a year. I wanted to go there now but mum and dad wouldn’t let me.
I was just about to give up searching the horizon for Jasper and Tracker when I saw Tracker walking with another boy. Had this been why Tracker had left so suddenly? Did he have a cousin or brother we didn’t know about?
I smiled and shouted over Jesse. We ran to Tracker as he entered the gate to the garden that surrounded the school building.
“Where have you been?” I chastised him. He looked at me with his usual bored, stoic face.
“I went to get my friend.” He looked to his side to a boy with messy, sandy-coloured hair. His skin was a golden-brown colour, he looked very tanned. His eyes were an extremely light brown, almost like honey, and something weird hit me when he looked directly into my eyes.
Jaspers POV
Would she recognise me? She was holding my gaze intently and looking at me with a curiousness I knew well.
“So, who are you?” She asked me and I wasn’t sure what to answer. I just kept staring into her gorgeous chocolate-coloured eyes. As a wolf, I'd seen her eyes, but something was different this time, almost as if I couldn’t break away from the gaze. Tracker elbowed me and I glared at him.
“Jesus, Tracker.” I growled at him, causing the girls to take a step back and Tracker almost broke a smile. Still angry, I turned on the girls. “I'm Jasper!” I said, not even realising what I had said. Suddenly, Jesse started laughing.
“That’s why Jasper hasn’t been today, he's turned into a human.” My eyes went wide, wondering if they had known about werewolves all along, when Ivy started laughing too. Not a gentle laugh but the hugest belly laugh I had ever heard from her. I don’t know why, but it really annoyed me.
“What are you talking about, i***t?” I asked Jesse. That stopped the laughing and I smirked, happy that they had. Ivy stepped forward with anger in her eyes.
“Don’t call her an i***t, you don’t even know her!” Her voice was a higher octave than I was used to, and her eyes were glistening. Why was she so angry at me? Jesse was an i***t, even Ivy knew that. “I wish Jasper was here, he'd bite you for me!” And with that she turned to leave, dragging Jesse with her.
“Well… that went well” Tracker said, again a smirk reaching his lips but not quite forming into a smile. I felt guilty for upsetting Ivy, but she had laughed with Jesse, making me feel stupid for thinking that humans could ever know about werewolves.
