Chapter 13 Peraltas 1820 until 1848 The Peralta name is found woven throughout any publication referencing the search for gold in the Superstition Mountains. A large Mexican family of prospectors that lived in the Superstition Mountains for years, owning large tracts of land. Having discovered large quantities of gold, none of them ever divulged the location of their mine. The Peraltas had enjoyed fairly good relationship with the Native Americans (Apaches) in the area, but their gold prospecting lifestyle put an end to that. Before long, in 1848, when the Peralta’s began removing gold from the mountain, a region the Apache’s held sacred, the Apache’s massacred most of the Peralta’s. The Apaches then buried the gold held by the Peraltas, and kept secret the location of the gold mine. It
