the broken mirror
The aroma of warm bread, still slightly crusty, mingled with the sweet perfume of honeysuckle climbing the fence. It was a symphony of summer scents, a perfect accompaniment to my joyful skips down the faded sidewalk. Sunlight dappled through the leaves of ancient oak trees, casting dancing shadows that mimicked my own lighthearted steps. "Look, Mommy!" I exclaimed, pointing towards a fluffy cloud shaped like a playful puppy. "He's wagging his tail!" I giggled, my blonde hair, streaked with playful green highlights, bouncing with each jump. It was one of those perfect summer days, where the air felt warm and sleepy. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees, their branches swaying like dancers in a silent waltz. The ice cream cone melted deliciously in my mouth, a sweet symphony of strawberry and cream. Suddenly, Mommy's phone rang, shattering the idyllic scene. Her smile vanished, replaced by a frown so deep it made my stomach twist. Her hand, holding the phone, shook violently. She gasped, a sound that made the playful puppy cloud disappear. The world seemed to tilt on its axis, and the happy sounds of the street faded away. The phone slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering onto the sidewalk. I stopped skipping, the melting ice cream cone forgotten. My emerald green eyes, usually sparkling with mischief, widened in alarm. A shiver crawled down my spine, my breath catching in my throat. The playful puppy cloud seemed to vanish, replaced by a menacing storm cloud blotting out the sun, casting my world in shadow. Mommy's face crumpled, her eyes widening in a silent plea. A strangled gasp escaped her lips. "We need to go home, now," she whispered, her voice trembling. I didn't understand. Why were we leaving? The puppy cloud was gone, and Mommy looked scared. I wished I could make the scary feeling go away. Mommy grabbed my hand, her grip so tight it hurt. "We need to go home, now," she repeated, her voice trembling. We hurried towards our small cottage, her steps quick and frantic. Once inside, she frantically gathered a few belongings into a small bag, her movements a blur of panicked energy. As she did so, I noticed her eyes, wide with fear, and her hand trembling uncontrollably. My own heart began to pound, a drumbeat against my ribs, each beat a hammer blow against my chest. "Here, sweetheart," she said softly, handing me my beloved stuffed wolf, Mr. Grumbles. "Hold onto him tight." Before I could fully understand what was happening, the front door burst open, and Daddy stood in the doorway, his face a mask of fury. His eyes, usually twinkling with amusement, narrowed into slits, the veins in his forehead bulging. I flinched back, pressing Mr. Grumbles against my chest. My two uncles came in behind him. Uncle Bo, with his broad shoulders, shaved head, and a tattoo snaking up his arm, smiled at me. "Come on, sweetheart," he said, his voice surprisingly gentle, though his eyes held a grim determination. "Let's go play a game." I tried to pull away, whimpering, "No, no, no!" but he held my hand too tightly. They took me to the living room and closed the door. I could hear Mommy and Daddy arguing, their voices loud and angry. Daddy's voice was like a growl, and Mommy's voice was like a tiny bird trying to escape a cage. I hugged Mr. Grumbles tight, wishing I could disappear. I tried to block out the terrifying sounds, but they seeped into my ears, a cacophony of fear and despair. My mind raced with a thousand terrifying what-ifs. What was happening? Why was Daddy so angry? Where was Mommy going? Finally, a heavy silence descended upon the house, broken only by my shallow breaths. The door creaked open, and Daddy emerged, his face pale and drawn, his eyes filled with a chilling fury. "Brianna," his voice, rough and gravelly, cut through the silence. "Would you like to go for a walk? We can go look at the stars. We can even go to your favorite spot. The cliff that overlooks the lake." The men exchanged uneasy glances, their eyes darting towards her father, seeking his approval. Uncle Dan, his voice barely a whisper, murmured, "Are you sure, boss? This might not be the best idea…the gods will still punish you. She is after all your blood no matter what she is." A cruel smile twisted her father's lips. "They should thank me for correcting this mistake." Brianna, confused and a little excited at the mention of her favorite spot, nodded. Anything to escape the suffocating tension, the fear that clawed at her throat. As we walked, the cool night air brushed against my skin, but it did little to soothe the icy dread that had settled in my stomach. A lead weight pressed down on my chest, making it difficult to breathe. Each breath was a struggle against the suffocating weight of fear, my mind racing with images of my mother, alone and helpless. Suddenly, a strange tingling sensation, like a thousand tiny spiders crawling across my skin, washed over me. It was fleeting, gone as quickly as it came, leaving me with a lingering sense of unease. I glanced around, but I saw nothing. Just the shadows of the trees swaying in the moonlight. I yawned, my eyelids heavy, the weight of the day finally catching up to me. "Tired, sweetheart?" Daddy asked, his voice deceptively gentle, a chilling contrast to the rage that had consumed him earlier. I nodded, snuggling closer to him, clutching Mr. Grumbles, seeking the warmth of his embrace. He scooped me up, his arms surprisingly strong, and began to walk, his footsteps echoing in the stillness of the night. Soon, the world faded into a haze of drowsiness, the fear and confusion giving way to a false sense of security. I awoke with a jolt, disoriented. As her peaceful world was shattered. A scream tore from my throat, but it was swallowed by the wind. Her father's voice, cold and venomous, echoed in my ears. "Abomination." A blinding flash of light. The air grew thick with ozone. The intense heat, the blinding brightness, seemed to sear my skin. Pain, slamming into me like a truck, shattered my world into a million agonizing shards. The darkness suffocated and smothered me. In another world, a mother werewolf, her silver fur shimmering in the moonlight, watched her pups play beneath a willow tree. Three moons bathed the forest in a lavender hue, casting long, ethereal shadows that danced among the trees. Peace and tranquility reigned supreme. Suddenly, a strange stillness washed over the forest. The air grew heavy, charged with an eerie energy. A flash of light deep in the forest followed by a scream echoing through the trees. Shattering the peace, like a pebble dropped in still water in a pond.
