Roy suddenly stepped in front of me, blocking my path.
“Elliott, you should come train with me.”
“What!” I stuttered, watching Alex leave. “Can we do this later?”
I looked behind Roy again, watching Alex as he took the stairs to the dorm.
“Are you going somewhere else?”
I sighed. Perhaps I’d just see him later. Alex had already left my sight, taking the stairs to the dorm.
“Let’s go,” I said with a small smile.
He took me to a different field. It was small and looked abandoned.
“The school used this place for combat training once, but now it’s moved,” Roy explained. I nodded at him.
“Have you turned?” he asked.
I rubbed the bridge of my nose and rearranged my glasses. “No, and you?”
“I turned last year. Do you want to see my wolf?” Immediately, he turned into a brown wolf, his fur so soft.
An idea came to my head, and I smirked. “How about I train with you in this form?”
“What?!” His wolf purred. “I doubt you can beat me in wolf form even if you try when I’m human.”
“Let’s see.” I winked with a side smile.
First, I pulled my glasses down and rolled my sleeves.
Roy charged forward; I dodged, rolling to the other side.
“The ranked one student—I met him,” I said, breathing hard as I jumped, turned in the air, kicked Roy from behind, and landed on my feet.
“Wow, that’s cool,” he exclaimed.
I smirked.
“The ranked one student you’re talking about—Lucian.”
“His name is Lucian,” I groaned as I dodged a kick from Roy.
“Yeah, he bullies fresh students a lot. Have you heard of Nightshade Pack?”
“Yeah, I heard they’re really strong and powerful,” I replied. Father always told me stories of how a brave young Alpha saved his pack from another Alpha who tried to take their land.
“That Alpha is Lucian’s brother,” Roy replied. “But he died shortly after taking the Alpha seat, and Lucian took over.”
“So he’s an Alpha?” I wiped my face, smiling as Roy and I both panted hard.
“Yes, he is. He came to Moonlight High to train further while his beta manages things back home. He’s mostly treated better than the other students. Elder Gideon dwells on ranks like it’s his second skin. The lower your rank, the more you struggle to survive in the hands of Lucian,” he said, then paused. “I saw him with you at the hall. Did something happen?”
I shook my head. “He only asked me to see him after.”
Roy’s eyes shone. “Did you go?”
I shook my head slowly. He breathed out in frustration. “He’ll soon send his minions over. We should return to our dorm.”
I followed Roy, and we returned to the dorm. Alex was on the bed, lying down, facing the ceiling, his eyes closed.
Just as we entered the room, a knock followed.
“Go to the bathroom, just in case it’s them.”
I nodded and rushed into the bathroom.
I heard Roy’s voice from the room.
“Step aside.”
That was Chris—the guy who had mocked me for my rank the first time I entered the school.
“What are you looking for here, Chris?” Roy asked.
“Don’t make me move you. It’s Lucian’s order. You either bring him out, or we enter and take him by force,” Chris said.
I stayed in the bathroom, my head resting on the wall. Not like I was weak enough to be running and hiding inside a bathroom.
Keeping a low profile until I get what I want was important, but the urge to go out there and punch Lucian and that Chris prickled my skin.
Ranks, my foot. I puffed out air with a scoff and almost opened the door when I heard a loud bang.
“Oh no, Roy,” I muttered, almost twisting the doorknob but stopped when I heard another voice.
“He’s not here. Or are you deaf?”
That was Alex.
I opened the bathroom door slightly to take a peek.
“No one’s speaking with you, nobody. Son of a lowly beta— it’s a grace you were given a rank two. What a disgrace to our rank! A rank five or lower would’ve suited you better,” Chris spat with an arrogant, amused smile.
I looked at Alex where he still lay. How could anyone say that? Did he not know Alex was the Alpha of Crescent Moon? Could it be a secret here? Perhaps that’s why he also wore a mask at the pack— and probably why Father was always attending his meetings. Father must have known he’d been attending this school undercover. But why?
“Bring him out now, or you’ll incur the wrath of Alpha Lucian,” Chris glared at Roy.
I tightened my fists.
Alex stood up and walked toward the bathroom. “Oh, Moon Goddess, what is he doing?”
I blinked profusely as I rested on the wall next to the door, my eyes shut tightly.
“Hey, come out,” Alex said as he opened the bathroom door.
I opened my eyes, making direct contact with his.
“Huh?” I said, with an innocent look, like I hadn’t heard him.
He didn’t respond and only left. I groaned inwardly and cursed under my breath.
Slowly, I walked out, my head lowered.
“That’s the low-life scum,” Chris said as soon as I stepped out, laughing, and the other two he brought with him joined in the laughter too.
"That's right, you should obey." He said to Alex.
“Seize him now,” Chris ordered. Roy quickly stepped in as the other two tried to come after me.
“You won’t take him.” He already had his arm wide. “I know what you intend to do with him, but those wicked acts you call punishment will only kill him. He’s a new student. I’ll teach him everything he needs to know, and he’ll never cross paths with you guys again.”
My gaze softened on Roy, seeing how he stood up for me and defended me.
Chris wasn’t having it. He signaled to his men, and they immediately pushed Roy out of the way.
“Alpha Lucian is pissed already. You’ll have to come explain to him yourself,” Chris glared at Roy, who was pushed to the floor.
I looked at Alex; his gaze was elsewhere. He looked unbothered.
Why would he reveal my hiding spot if he was just going to ignore me?
Besides this matter wasn't of his concern. Tch, I groaned inwardly.
I could fight them off now, but that wouldn’t change a thing. Alpha Lucian rules this place— it would only make things worse if I kept getting noticed by him.
The boys grabbed my shirt; my eyes widened. I almost felt their hands on my chest. Damn these arrogant bastards. I gritted my teeth.
“Lower your gaze, low-life!” Chris shouted.
I refused, my eyes still locked on Chris.
“I said lower your damn gaze!” He raised his hand to hit me, but Alex caught it. With one slight push, Chris was shoved back heavily.
“Leave,” he ordered the two holding me, and they scurried out.
What the hell is he doing?
