No one ever said anything about how scary and foolish Alex could be.
My heart was literally pounding in my ears, and my injured arm throbbed, but he just kept tightening his grip around it.
The moment his eyes turned golden, a tear slipped from my eyes—
and that seemed to snap him out of whatever had possessed him.
He let go instantly.
I carefully moved past him and rushed out of the woods.
What happened after that, I had no idea.
I only remembered getting permission to go to the school clinic. It was granted, and convincing the clinic technician to let me sleep there for a few hours was easy.
A loud bang that made my inside curl resounded inside my head. Pain surged through me.
“Who the hell—”
The air in my lungs vanished when I saw Chris standing above me. His minions behind him held a metal pan.
They woke me up with THAT?!
Damn them. I gritted my teeth.
“Alpha Lucian has called for you.”
“The clinic technician told me to wait until my arm fully heals. Tell him I’ll come after that.”
I turned away and pulled the blanket up—only for it to be snatched off immediately.
Lucian gestured to one of the guys, and the next second, I was lifted over a shoulder and dragged out.
“Drop me down!”
“Let me go!”
I hit his back repeatedly, but nothing worked.
I shut my eyes, cursing under my breath, eventually giving up.
He entered the school hall and dropped me roughly. I landed on my butt.
Sitting above me was Alpha Lucian, with that egoistic smile and arrogant look that makes me want to claw his face out, sat proudly on his face.
I got up and dusted myself off. The sound of the door closing made me turn—Chris and his minions had left, locking us in.
“What the—
Fuck.”
My fist clenched.
What are they up to?
“What is this about? Let me go,” I demanded.
He chuckled softly, got up from his chair, and walked toward me.
“I wanted to teach you a lesson at the hunting game, but then you got paired with that good-for-nothing. I thought you both would be humiliated…”
His voice carried hatred and something like pain.
“Turns out the fool had a trick up his sleeve after all.”
Does he mean Alex won?
“For your punishment,” he paused, “kneel and wipe my shoes with your tongue, you low-life bastard.”
My breath hitched, the world spinning around me seemed to stop.
My eyes snapped toward him.
Bastard?
He just called me a bastard?
Lucian tilted his head, eyes red and wide with anger.
“Are you looking at me?!”
“Lower your gaze. This instant!”
I didn’t move an inch. My eyes met his—with a warning.
I was at the edge of snapping.
He scoffed, disbelieving, and raised his hand to smack me.
I was ready to dodge or push him back, even if his strength as an Alpha outmatched mine.
But his hand never reached me.
Someone appeared between us.
From the back of his head—the short dark hair, the stance, that scent my senses had marked ever since the woods—I knew it was Alex.
He turned his head briefly, and for a moment I saw his eyes—golden brown.
Alpha Lucian was pushed backwards by Alex.
He wiped his mouth, embarrassed and annoyed by Alex’s presence.
Alex held my hand, pulling me close with a sharp glare at Lucian.
I was beginning to wonder if this was another version of Alex.
The same person who held my arm in the woods…
staring at me like something had taken over him.
I raised my head, searching his face.
He was still glaring at Lucian with that intense, unreadable look.
The tension between them was thick.
“It’s fine,” I muttered. “I can protect myself.”
Instead, he gripped my wrist tighter and pulled me closer—so close he positioned me in front of him, his hands on my shoulders. My heart raced.
He was taller by a believable inch or two.
I gasped at the closeness, my fingers clutching the hem of my shirt.
My stupid heart wouldn't stop racing.
After what happened in the woods I should hate him.
Go far away from him.
But what can I do when he suddenly swoops in to save me. Perhaps he was really under a spell back in the woods?
Or maybe…..his curse? Could it be?
“Protecting a rank five? Are you out of your mind, Alex?” Lucian scoffed.
“I might really lose it if you lay hands on him.”
Lucian laughed loudly.
“How cute. He must be one of your family. A pack of weirdos.”
Alex blinked slowly—then suddenly gasped, clutching his chest.
He shoved me away instantly, with a forced i never expected.
I fell to the side, almost bruising my arm again.
It happened so quick I had no time to think.
Why does he protect me… only to hurt me?
Is he taking pleasure in this too?
I was wrong about him.
Ella, get a grip of yourself. Find evidence that points to your father’s killer and leave this place, I told myself.
As I stood up, Lucian appeared behind me instantly.
He grabbed my hair tightly, his fingers tangled in the curls.
I quickly held the wig down with both hands to stop my world from falling apart.
I kicked him from behind and he let go. I bolted for the door, but he caught me, wrapping his arm around my neck, laughing.
“Now, let’s see,” he breathed against my ear. “You want to protect him, right?”
He grinned and forced me to face Alex.
I tried to wiggle out of his grip, but his hold was strong.
“You never include yourself in school matters. What changed?“ He laughed.
“You should just keep on being dumb.” Lucian grunted.
Alex’s expression twisted with concern, and that same hard glare…
like he might snap again.
“You can’t say anything, huh?”
Lucian grabbed my chin and forced it upward.
I screamed, my breath caught.
Alex’s fingers twitched.
A low growl rumbled through him… then heat.
The room temperature rose instantly.
“Let him go,” Alex said, breathing harder than he could control.
His eyes glowed fully golden.
I didn’t know if Lucian could see it—but anyone would be terrified.
Alex’s growl intensified.
Lucian’s grip loosened. Sweat dripped down his face.
Alex’s claws were already out, teeth bared, gaze locked on Lucian.
“We aren’t allowed to turn on school premises. What has gotten into you, Alex?” Lucian snapped.
In a flash—too fast to see—Alex tore me from Lucian’s grip and dragged me outside.
He didn’t stop pulling me. He dragged me through the hallways, down corridors, ignoring my pain.
He didn’t care. Or he didn’t realize.
He dragged me straight to our room.
He threw open the door, stormed inside, then turned and pinned me to the wall.
He was breathing hard, his body trembling.
“What’s gotten into you? Why are you doing this?” I demanded.
He paused for a while, staring at me.
My heartbeat increased, my eyes met his the golden brown in his eyes slowly dimming. I wanted to touch it, to understand him.
What has gotten into me?
I quickly snapped out of my thought.
Then he said, like he could see through my pretence.
“Don’t let anyone touch you like that again,” he snapped, his voice low.
I don't know it it was the curse talking or Alex.
But my days in moonlight high just got worsened.
