Why?
“Did you enjoy the gift I gave you?” asked the fat man sitting on the edge of the bed.
“Of course I enjoyed it very much, dear. My poor husband couldn't possibly give me such a lavish birthday present,” said the woman whose body was only wrapped in a bath towel.
“Is he coming back anytime soon?”
“I don't really care about him. These days he's busy working to support our miserable household.”
Barnett Cullen had just arrived in front of the simple old residence. He was surprised to hear a familiar man's voice inside the residence. The voice became even more painful as his feet stopped right in front of the door to the main room. The intermittent gasps made her heart race. He spontaneously dropped the gift he had brought for his wife onto the floor.
“Wait a moment. I think I heard something outside,” Alice said from the room.
Barnett was even more surprised when the door to the room opened. He could see his boss sleeping naked on their hotbed together with his beloved wife. Today was his spoiled wife's birthday. He was willing to work overtime to buy gifts and come home early to surprise Alice. However, he never expected to get this betrayal from his wife.
“You bastard! I'll finish you off tonight!” shouted Barnett as he regained consciousness.
“Why did you come back so fast?” asked Dauren as a hard grab hit him right in the face.
With an annoyed look, Barnett delivered another hard punch to his superior. “You're dead tonight, asshole!”
Alice quickly broke up the struggle inside. “Stop it already,” she stammered.
Barnett immediately came to his senses after a delicate hand pulled roughly on his arm. “Why are you having an affair behind my back? Why are you doing this?” His eyes glazed over even more when he noticed his wife's irritated gaze.
“How dare you hit me! I'll fire you today!” snapped Dauren, who could still not raise his body from the floor.
Barnett's gaze seemed to want to finish off the man who had destroyed his household. However, he soon realized with the woman's gaze in front of him that the woman was still silent and started walking to help Barnett get up from helplessness.
“Alice?” said Barnett, hoping the woman would return to him. “Why?”
Alice sternly looked straight into her husband's gloomy face. “I'm tired of this, Barnett. You're embarrassing me! All my friends laugh at me because they see you working on the side of the road!”
“Everything I do is just for you!” Barnett's voice was getting weaker.
“Get out of here! You're useless, Barnett,” Dauren said as he patted Alice's shoulder with arrogance.
Barnett could no longer control his anger. He consciously grabbed the fat man's body to deliver another blow. This situation had trampled on his pride as a man. He was willing to do anything to protect and make his wife happy. He was willing to leave everything behind for the woman from that troubled family.
“I won't let you live old man! All this time I respected you as my superior. I didn't care about your bad attitude towards me. But for this, I'll never let you live in peace,” grumbled Barnett with both hands alternately punching the face of the man beneath him.
“Barnett, stop it!” shouted Alice, who was still trying to break up the fight. “Barnett, don't hurt Dauren!”
Those words made Barnett's anger even more uncontrollable. However, a complex object spontaneously hit his head. The glass flower vase was knocked free onto the floor, and blood began to rush to his head. He ignored the pain and began to stare at his wife's face with sadness. Alice began to worry when she saw that the blood on her husband's head wouldn't stop. She still vividly remembered how well he had treated her during their marriage.
“Have you had enough of making me suffer?” Alice attacked once again.
“I've always tried to spoil you, Alice. I've always indulged your whims! In fact, I'd give you my heart if you wanted it!” Barnett tried to approach his wife.
Alice immediately dropped her gaze and moved away from Barnett. “I don't want to live like this! I want to live in a luxurious house with delicious food every day.”
She focused her gaze back on Barnett. “I want to have a fancy car, lots of money, vacationing to my heart's content. You can't give me that satisfaction, but Dauren can!”
Barnett's lethal smile began to be etched on his thin lips. “I can't believe you're the same as that b***h on the side of the road, Alice!”
Alice laughed devilishly after listening to her husband's words. “I don't need this cheap gift, Barnett,” she said as she picked up the small box on the floor.
“You don't deserve this gift either!” retorted Barnett.
“How disgusting. In fact, you can say that to me,” said Alice as she opened the small town in her hand. Both eyebrows furrowed upon seeing a small object inside.
“Happy birthday, Young Master. Your monthly dividend and 20 million have been transferred to your account.” A unique digital recording sounded after Alice pressed the button.
The Cullen family had a rule over their family finances. They would not get any financial help before the age of 25. They were required to be independent to compete in the business world at a young age. A month ago was Barnett's birthday. He deliberately hid the maturity gift from his wife to surprise her. However, she unexpectedly betrayed him. Inside the box was also an unlimited card and the badge of a robust global company in the city.
“20 million? What does this mean?” Alice stammered.
The terrible incident that happened to her family came back to her mind. Her family was in debt to the Cullen family, causing her father's company to go bankrupt. However, things started to get better after Barnett's arrival. She knew that the Cullen family had unlimited wealth all over the world.
Alice's face paled even more when she saw Barnett's bloodied face again. “Who are you? What is your relationship with the Cullen family?”
