Black Rock Springs was impressive and had both good water and more grazing area than they had seen in fifty miles. Five miles from Black Rock, The Double Hot Springs were found, with untouchable hot water. This stretch of the trail was challenging. Mud meadow also stuck up to its reputation, by slowing travel and making walking even more dirty and difficult. Trudging north past Mud Meadows into what would be known as Soldier Meadows, the teams and the Pony were directed past what would become Camp McGarry, a U.S Army fort, in the mid 1860s. The ruts turned west towards Fly Canyon with it's infamous wagon slide. Clarence locked the wheels and tied the wagon with ropes to his oxen.
