The Applegate Trail

Initially the Applegate Trail didn't look much different than the California. Among a sea of sagebrush the group camped in the shadow of Bruff's Singular Rock. It wasn't a very large shadow and the rock wasn't exactly singular. It was a funny configuration of two large rocks, one larger and covering more area, and one that seemed to be propped up next to the first like a tower. The trail had first been the project of men who wanted a safer, southern route to get into, or out of, Oregon. At the time there was still some feeling that the British might want Oregon all for themselves. However, years after completing the trail about 3,000 people used it to populate the Rogue Valley and beyond.
