Where has our love gone?

1006 Words
Lanie felt the bed cave in just a bit and she knew that it was Darry. She looked at the clock. It was after 1 is. Where had he been? The realty company closed at 9 pm. There was no way that he was still at the office at that time of night. Darry wrapped his arms around her and kissed her on the cheek. She could smell the alcohol on his breath. Lanie clinched up and was upset but didn't say anything to him. She just closed her eyes and went back to sleep.      It was 5 am and the alarm clock was going off. Lanie rolled over to find that Darry had already gotten up. She could smell coffee coming from the kitchen but couldn't hear anyone downstairs. "I'm so comfortable but need to pee, I better get up," said Lanie. She got up, and walked into the bathroom, used it, and washed her hands. She started to brush her teeth and remembered that it's Tuesday and she needed to get dressed for work. She opened the closet door, and looked down to get her work shoes, and noticed the box on the floor. She quickly closed the closet door and held back the tears as she remembered last night, how Darry didn't show up. How he was late. Lanie just wondered to herself what she was doing wrong. "I'm a good wife. I do everything. I keep this house clean, I make sure his clothes are washed and laid out for work. I make sure that his food is on the table when he comes home from work. He never misses a meal, he never comes home to a dirty house. I have worked so hard for this marriage. What did I do to deserve for him to start acting this way." she said.      Lanie was angry, rightfully so. They had been married for 25 years! Lanie and Darry met when they were 13 and 14 years old, and when they both were 17 years old, their parents had signed for them to be married. Both were sexually active at a young age and Lanie found out that she was pregnant when she was 14 years old. The only person that she had ever told was Darry. Their parents had no idea that they were going to be parents. Unfortunately, at six weeks along in her pregnancy, Lanie lost the baby during a cheerleading accident. Before she knew that she was pregnant, she had tried out for cheerleading and made the team. Afterward, she found out she was pregnant. She started having the symptoms. Morning sickness, a craving for ice and pickles, and many other things. She started gaining a little bit of weight but she couldn't quite the team. Cheerleading is all that she talked about since she was a toddler. If she quit, her parents would be asking questions and Lanie wouldn't know what to say. So she stayed on the team. During one of their competitions, Lanie was thrown in the area during their performance when things went wrong, and Lanie wasn't caught by her teammates, she hit the ground extremely hard. Little did she know that it would have effects on her later.     Lanie was rushed to the emergency room by her coach. Her mother and father are out of town and Lanie had been staying with her aunt. The doctors had asked Lanie if there was a possibility that she could be pregnant, to which she replied, "no." Fortunately for her, the doctors didn't give her a pregnancy test. If they had, her parents would have found out. Her parents would have made her give the baby up, and there is no telling what would have happened with her and Darry. The doctors did some X-rays on her and once they came back clear they let Lanie go home. After Lanie got home everything was good for about a week until Lanie started bleeding. It wasn't normal, something was wrong. She started having pain in her abdomen. She called Darry and told him that something was wrong. Lanie didn't know what to do, so Darry called his older brother and he took them to an OBGYN. While there, she found out that she had miscarried due to the fall from cheerleading.      Lanie went into a deep depression. Which caused issues with her and Darry, but he stuck by her side through it. She pushed him to the side and became distant for a few months. Darry did everything for her. No matter what she needed he was there. After a few months, they worked out their issues and Lanie and Darry became closer than they ever had before. After their marriage at the age of 17, Darry and Lanie tried to have children. To no avail, Lanie just wasn't getting pregnant. Fast forward 10 years later, Lanie decided that she wanted to go see a doctor and find out why she wasn't getting pregnant. The doctor diagnosed her with Anovulation. More specifically, PCOS. She would never be able to have children without tests and other things to help her. The doctor told her that it could cost thousands and thousands of dollars and that was per treatment. Lanie never got pregnant again after that and her love for children continued as she decided to work with young ones in the local school district. She knew in her heart that she was meant to be a mother, and if she couldn't have one of her own, she was going to have many that she could teach.     7 am would be approaching soon, Lanie finished getting ready for work and headed downstairs. Darry was nowhere to be found. Dinner from the night before, still sat on the table, with the wine glass empty. Lanie put her head down and shook it. On the fridge, a note stating, "Gone to work, I didn't want to wake you, you were sleeping well. Enjoy your coffee, see you tonight at 7, love Darry."
