Reaper lost his mate the moment his second died but he never forgot her. How could he when he was tied to without ever having laid a finger on her. The rose inked onto his skin was a constant reminder that the rash words of his younger self had done so much more damage than death ever could. Little did he know he would meet her again at an interview but she wasn't Rose anymore.

Single Mum Bethany has been running for a long time, ever since the father of her child died. Now she just needs a safe place to hide from her past and protect her daughter. But little did she know she would run straight into Reaper…

"Don't run away from me, Rose." He was right there, behind her. So close she could feel his breath on her neck.

"My name is Bethany," She whirled. "And I didn't run anywhere, I walked."

Prologue
Prologue   Bethany Exhaled sharply. What the hell was she doing with her life that had her here? In front of an unknown building, on an unknown street in a town that she didn’t know. What had her life become that she had to move across the country just to find a better life for herself and her child. What was she doing with her god damn life? She perused the building in front of her, a pout forming on her lips as she studied it. It wasn’t what she was expecting. It actually looked pretty welcoming. In keeping with the area, she guessed. The whole town had some serious olde world charm going on. It was one of the reasons she chose it. The quiet quaintness of it all. The small schools. With the ocean one side and tree covered hills the other. It was the perfect place to raise a child. A perfect place to hide from her past. She just needed a job to fund their new life. She needed this job. Glancing down at herself and frowned noticing the slight smudge on her black trousers. Dammit and damn public transport as well. She had looked perfectly put together an hour ago. Well as perfect as she could. It was now or never, if she stood there much longer, she would be late for the interview she never expected to get. Or even worse wimp out totally. Give her a dive bar any day, that was where she felt most comfortable. But bar work wouldn’t wash now. Not in a town where she knew no one. Admin position with light cleaning duties for busy security firm. Must be able to work unsupervised. She didn’t have much admin experience; she would just have to learn on the job. If they would just give her the chance that was. Taking yet another shaky breath Bethany pushed open the door and stepped inside. The reception area was fairly spacious, a little on the sparse side but she instantly glad of the space when a giant of a man came barging out of one of the doors. She couldn’t help it. She squealed. He was so god damn big. With his blonde hair and gruff beard.  Whoa. Shifter. No doubt. The advertisement hadn’t said anything about this being a shifter business. Not that it made any difference to her. As long as they paid her on time it could be run by the mob for all she cared.  It just would have been nice to know before she almost ran into Mr man mountain. Who was staring at her with the strangest eyes she had ever seen. Then she realised she had been the one who had been staring. Pull yourself together Bethany, she mentally shook herself. “Hello” His face didn’t move but he did c**k his head as he leant on the circular reception desk. White, like the rest of the room. Not even a plant. No artwork just white. It felt sterile. And giant man seemed to fill all the available space. “Hello?” It was a definite question. “I’m Beth” she strode forward. Hand outstretched.  Hoping against hope she didn’t fall over on her black heels. He just sat there, staring at the outstretched hand as if he didn’t know what to do with it. Well damn. Beth dropped the offending hand to her side. What was his problem? “I’m here about the job I have an appointment” He nodded. His eyes not leaving her face.  Did he just flare his nostrils at her? Then just like that he stood, a smile forming under the fashionable beard. Though Bethany had a feeling it was something he had been sporting for a lot longer than fashion dictated. He looked like a bloody Viking. But the real kind before it became fashionable. “I’ll let Roman know you’re here” he glanced about as if unfamiliar with the area. “I’d say take a seat, but we don’t seem to have any” he barked out a laugh. Was this guy for real? Did he even work here? Had she just made herself late by talking to a complete stranger. “Requiem are you scaring the poor girl” a small woman appeared out of the door to the right. Small and curvy. Her very rounded belly protruding from the front of a billowing mustard colour top. It did great things for her complexion. “Hi, I’m Rory, you must be Beth” she came forward and held out a hand. Finally, some normalcy. “I am yes” Beth smiled. “I’m here about the job” “Stop staring at the poor girl you grumpy dragon, before she runs out of the door screaming” she punched the much bigger man playfully. “Follow me Beth, my husband is expecting you” “Your married to the boss?” “There’s three bosses here but Roman is the least grumpy” she gave a laugh. “So, you will be meeting with him. If that big oaf did interviews, we would never hire anyone, and I really want to get going on my honeymoon after the little one is born” She smoothed a hand over her swollen belly, a wistful smile playing over her lips.   “New receptionist is a beauty “Requiem lent heavily on the open doorway. He cleared his throat loudly when his statement didn’t get the desired effect. Reaper raised his eyes from the open file oh his desk and sighed. “Hello Requiem” “Screw Hello did you hear what I said?” “I hear you, but she’s out of bounds and you know it. We need someone in the office so no bedding this one “ The blonde man grinned. “She’s just my type you know, quiet, submissive looking. All pale and fresh” he paused “smells funny though” Reaper laughed, slapping his hands on the desk.  “Smells funny “ Requiem glared his strange golden bird eyes flashing. “Not like that, she kind of smells like you. Like Mer” he shrugged “but you just carry on laughing” But Reaper had sobered instantly. His kind were super rare. There weren’t any undocumented Mer shifters. As a whole they stuck together rigidly. Except for him. He had no Pod anymore just the men he called brothers. “She’s a mermaid?” “No, I don’t think so, maybe she’s half mermaid I don’t know the scent is all diluted and s**t. I almost missed it. It’s like it’s there and not there” Reaper was rising from his chair. Mind going crazy. “So yeah thought you might want to know, she’s a cute thing that’s for sure. Will be nice to have something pretty to look at” Other than the very out of bounds and very pregnant Rory, he added silently.  “All red hair and freckles, like a little wet dream, even down to the cute little accent she still has. It reminds me of yours when you first joined the regiment” But Reaper was gone.
