Chapter 12: What's Mine

1240 Words
Nova’s POV The room was too quiet. I lay on the Luna’s bed, fingers tracing idle shapes against the embroidered silk sheet. Every inch of this room reeked of Aurora—so pristine, so polished, so nauseating. But not for long. My eyes flicked to the door when I heard the faint, muffled conversation just outside. Then came the sound I’d been waiting for: footsteps. Three sets. And then the click of the door closing again. Gone. I sat up quickly, ears sharp. “They’ve been called to the kitchens,” I whispered to myself with a victorious smile. “Finally.” The Luna’s precious watchdogs wouldn’t be back for at least a few minutes. I didn’t have much time—but I had enough. I slipped from the bed and made my way across the room, my silk skirts swishing faintly. My gaze landed on the ornate armoire, its doors carved with roses and thorns—how fitting. And there it was, resting atop the vanity like it was waiting for me: the jewelry box. Gold. Bejeweled. Locked, but not truly. All I had to do was nudge the latch, and it creaked open like it knew I belonged here. One by one, I admired her jewels. Rubies. Emeralds. Pearls. The glint of wealth and legacy. But then I saw it. A simple yet breathtaking ring nestled inside its velvet slot. A diamond so pure, so clear, it practically sang under the light. My breath caught in my throat. I didn't have to wonder what it was. The wedding ring. My fingers trembled with delight as I lifted it. Of course, Aurora wasn’t wearing it anymore. The coldness between them had made sure of that. And yet she kept it, hidden away like a relic. As if she still held onto something. Some hope. But now it was mine. I slipped it into the pocket of my dress and let out a slow exhale. A dangerous thrill coursed through me. One step closer. With no one watching, my legs carried me out of the room. I should’ve stayed. I knew I should’ve. But curiosity burned hot in my chest, and the mansion felt too alive—too filled with opportunity. I crept down the hall, following the distant murmur of voices. As I neared the receiving room, the sound became clearer. Lady Helena’s voice rang out, gentle but pointed. “You two are still sleeping together, right? I mean… surely, a child must come soon.” I froze just before the corner. The rage bubbled so fast, so raw, that I didn’t even think. I didn’t breathe. I stepped out from the hallway, into the light. “No!” I snapped, louder than I intended. Gasps filled the room. The Alpha’s mother and father turned toward me, their faces contorted with shock. Oh no. Oh yes. The room fell into silence for a beat too long. But I didn’t shrink. I stood tall, hands clasped over my stomach, expression perfectly crushed. “I-I didn’t mean to—” I began in a trembling voice, eyes immediately welling with tears. “I just… I can’t take it anymore.” Alexander’s head whipped around. “Nova?” He stood quickly, instantly at my side like a knight to his princess. I clutched his arm, pulling him close, tears streaming now—tears I could summon like magic. “Please… please tell them the truth, Alexander. I-I can’t keep pretending!” Lady Helena’s brows rose. “Pretending?” “You haven’t been sleeping in the same room for weeks,” Nova sobbed, burying her face in his shoulder. “You said you were going to end it. That I’d finally be your Luna. Why are we still hiding? Why can’t they know the truth?!” Ruppert stood, fists clenched. “Alexander. What is the meaning of this?!” Alexander stiffened beside me, jaw tightening. “I… I didn’t mean for this to happen.” “Didn’t mean?” Lady Helena echoed. “Are you saying this is true? You brought another woman—an omega—into your Luna’s home?!” “I had no choice,” he said flatly, shielding me further. “Nova needed help. She had nowhere else to go.” “I am not just an omega… I was someone who could understand your son better than his wife. I am someone who holds more emotional impact to the alpha and I was there when he needed someone to lean on.” I crumbled the skirt of my dress as I could not stand how she was humiliating me simply because I was an omega. “My rank shouldn’t define me because I have made a huge impact to Alpha Alexander than this woman. I am exactly what he needs… we need each other more than anything.” I gulped as I could see Aurora watching me as she sip from her tea. Alexander looked at me with his soft eyes as he wiped my tears away before he looked at his parents. “I knew you would react this way so I was waiting for the perfect opportunity to explain. Nova and I have been great acquaintance for three months and I enjoyed her company. Is it too much to ask for a love that will last me a lifetime than a prison of marriage?” Ruppert’s voice was a roar. “And you thought the Luna’s room was the right place to keep her?! You thought this would not hurt the relationship between our families?!” I felt Alexander’s hand tighten over mine. “She’s fragile,” he said, trying to keep calm. “She needed protection. That’s all. I do not care about our family affair because I am the one in power, why must I fear politics?” “I do not care whatever you want to do with your lives so stop meddling with mine. I want Nova… and I love her more than anything else. Do not take that away from me.” “But I love you,” I whispered into his chest for them to hear. “I love you, and I know you love me too. Why else would you keep me this close?” “You—!” Ruppert surged forward, only stopped when Lady Helena placed a hand on his arm. “Enough,” she said sharply. Her eyes didn’t leave me. “So… this is the girl?” Alexander nodded once. Lady Helena exhaled deeply, then turned to her son. “You’ve humiliated your wife, your name, and your pack. Fix this. Immediately.” “I will,” Alexander replied. But I wasn’t done. “I won’t go back to hiding,” I said, stepping forward, wiping my tears. “You can’t ask me to stay in the shadows while Aurora gets praised for being the Luna when you don’t even share her bed.” Alexander didn’t speak. I knew I had pressed the buttons, and I was making sense. How can I not? The room felt like it had been split in two. And in that silence, I realized something important. Whether his parents liked it or not… I was no longer a secret. I have the situation circling into my palms and the upperhand is mine to take. After all, it is the alpha that has the powers to decide what must happen.
