CHAPTER 1

Number One Prison – Southern Wing. Today was different from usual. The inmates, who were normally assigned to public labor, had all gathered in one place, standing in neat rows as if they were in the military. Usually, they would be rebellious, defiant, even fighting with each other, but now they were more orderly than ever before. Standing at the front, facing them, was a young man around twenty-five years old and a middle-aged man, both exuding a cold, strict demeanor, as if anyone who came near would not escape disaster. The young man had a backpack slung over his shoulder, simply furrowed his brows, then turned to leave. "Salute to the Boss!" "Salute to the Boss!" The prisoners shouted in unison, their voices filled with a mix of fear and respect toward the young man. Five years ago, he had been a rookie who was bullied, but now he had become the prison leader, and no one dared to challenge him. And today, he was being released. The inmates were not just afraid; they were also relieved that they would no longer have to cower before that demon day after day, he was like a reincarnated asura. They still vividly remembered the day he single-handedly defeated the previous leader and his gang, staining the cell red with blood, a scene that could only be described as c*****e. “Now that you’re out, make sure you live well, start over.” The warden patted the young man on the shoulder, intentionally speaking loudly in front of the other inmates, then followed him outside. Once they were out of sight of the inmates, the warden continued: “Young Master, now that you’re out, what are your plans? As Mr. Smith said, in just six more months…” “I’ll make my own decisions. Your job here is to protect Mr. Smith; I’ll handle everything outside for him.” “Yes, Young Master.” The warden said nothing more and returned inside. Now, only the young man was left standing in front of the prison gate. No one had come to pick him up; no one cared. He looked up at the sky. The sky was gray, like the storm raging inside him. He remembered five years ago when he had still been a business tycoon, the man everyone wanted to approach, everyone wanted to win his favor. That year, business tycoon Richard Wang was accused of attempted r**e and intentionally causing serious injury, sentenced to six years in prison. That was him. Five years ago, he had been a rising star known to all, his business flourishing like a sail in a favorable wind, and he’d married the most beautiful woman in the city. In the end, he was accused by his sister-in-law of trying to r**e her, and when her boyfriend caught him, he fought back and caused 30% bodily harm. He was sentenced to six years in prison but, thanks to good behavior, was released a year early. He was out now, but everything had changed. The scenes of being welcomed by crowds were gone. No one had come for him, not even his wife. It was understandable, she must have grown to hate him. In the five years he’d been in prison, she had never visited. But those things didn’t matter right now. He had been released carrying the trust of the old inmate, so his personal affairs would have to wait. With that thought, Richard shouldered his backpack and walked alone to the way. Just then, a taxi stopped across the street, and a plainly dressed young man quickly got out and ran over. “Brother!” Hearing that voice, Richard froze for a moment before realizing who had come for him: it was his former assistant before prison, Victor Lee. But Victor was now dressed in cheap, street-market clothes that Richard could hardly believe. Before Richard went to prison, he had looked after Victor very well. Back then, although young but Victor was already driving an Audi. Now, how could things have gotten this bad? “Victor, why are you…” But Victor didn’t let Richard finish. He quickly cut in: “Brother, the Marshall family found out you were getting out early, so… your sister-in-law has…” “The Marshall family? What did they do? What about my wife?” “Because Rosa has leukemia, your sister-in-law needed money for her treatment… She’s sold all your assets, and now she’s had to listen to the Marshals. She’ll only get the money to treat Rosa if she agrees to marry the Thomas family’s young master.” Richard felt overwhelmed by the flood of information; he still couldn’t take it all in, especially… “Who is Rosa?” “Rosa is your daughter. When you went to prison, your wife was already two months pregnant. I wanted to tell you, but she absolutely forbade it and even threatened to keep you from seeing your child if I told you. You know how mad she was at you back then, about that…” “That r**e accusation was a setup.” “I know, but no one believed you. But let’s talk about that later. Brother, today your wife and the Thomas family’s young master are getting engaged. I couldn’t stop it.” Boom!!! It was like Richard had been struck by lightning. He couldn’t believe it: “Where’s the ceremony? Let’s go there, right now!” Richard never imagined that the first thing he’d hear after getting out of prison was that he had a daughter, and that his wife was being forced to marry someone else. Victor quickly warned: “But brother, we can’t afford to offend the Thomas family!” Not to mention that Richard was now just a newly released ex-convict, even the Richard of five years ago, whose company shares were worth tens of millions of dollars, would have been nothing but an ant kicking at a stone before the Thomas family! Richard roared: “I’m not even afraid of God! Which hotel?!” As a man, if he couldn’t protect his wife and daughter, what was the point of living? “At the Luxury Owen Hotel, 12:00 today.” “Go!” Once in the taxi, Richard’s thoughts were in chaos, but at least he’d regained some composure. He slapped his face hard, trying to calm himself down. He never expected that just five years would turn everything upside down. At sixteen, he had come from the countryside to the city to ride the wave of entrepreneurship. After a few years running a construction company, he’d amassed fixed assets worth tens of millions of dollars and even bought a mansion worth over ten million. If his daughter was sick, there was no way the entire fortune would have been wiped out, surely the Marshalls had manipulated things, forcing his wife to obey them. If so, they deserved to die. Back then, his sister-in-law had framed him, the Marshall family sent him to prison, separated him from his wife and daughter for five years, and destroyed his family. Now, with this new identity, both principal and interest, he makes sure they all pay. “I’m afraid it’s too late, there are only ten minutes left until 12:00.” Victor glanced at his watch and shook his head. Hearing Victor’s despair, Richard’s voice turned icy: “Will not. No one can touch my wife and daughter!” With that, he looked at Victor, making the latter’s skin crawl. For a moment, Victor felt there was something unfamiliar, almost frightening, about Richard. Richard’s gaze softened: “Lend me your phone.” “Here, here!” Victor hurriedly pulled his phone from his pocket and handed it to Richard. Richard dialed a number from memory. A deep, middle-aged voice answered: “Hello, who is this?” “It’s me!” Richard’s voice was low. The other end went silent, the voice trembling: “Young Master, you’re out of prison?” “The Thomas family wants to force my wife to marry their son. Warn both the Thomases and the Marshalls: if they dare harm my wife, I’ll destroy their whole family!!!” With that, he hung up. Destroy the whole Thomas family, was he kidding? Victor was shocked to his core. Richard spoke slowly: “Don’t ask too much, you’ll know soon enough. If the Marshalls have been this ruthless to my wife and daughter, they’ll have to pay back every last thing they owe me!” Five years in prison, Richard was no longer the man he once was. That title of Young Master that others had called him was not just a name. Now, the Marshalls could only tremble and quake before him! Now, Victor truly felt that the change Richard brought was no illusion at all.
