Chapter 5: The First Awakening
The chamber was heavy with silence. Isabella sat on the edge of the bed, her hands trembling, her breath uneven. Every sound seemed magnified—the crackle of firewood outside, the pacing of wolves in the courtyard, the steady rhythm of Lucian’s breathing beside her.
Isabella: “It’s inside me. I can feel it. Like claws scratching at my skin.”
Lucian (steady): “That is your wolf, It’s restless and It wants to be free.”
Isabella: “But I don’t know how. I don’t know if I want it.”
Lucian: “You don’t have to want it. It’s who you are.”
---
Her chest tightened. She pressed her hands against her ribs, gasping. For a moment, her vision blurred, and golden light flickered in her eyes.
Isabella (panicked): “Lucian… it’s happening again.”
Lucian (urgent): “Just breathe, don’t fight it. Fighting makes it worse.”
She shook her head violently.
Isabella: “I’m not ready. I can’t—”
Her voice broke into a growl. She clutched the bedframe, her nails digging into the wood. For a heartbeat, they looked like claws.
---
The door burst open. The Beta wolf stormed in, his eyes sharp.
Beta Wolf: “She’s shifting, finally, let us see if she survives.”
Lucian (snarling): “Get out.”
Beta Wolf: “If she is truly enigma, the pack deserves proof.”
Isabella’s body convulsed. She cried out, her voice torn between human and wolf.
Isabella: “Stop… please… I can’t—”
Lucian’s hand gripped hers, grounding her.
Lucian (low, commanding): “You can. You are stronger than you know.”
---
Her senses exploded. She could smell the Beta’s arrogance, hear the blood rushing through his veins, feel the pulse of the earth beneath her feet. Her eyes glowed gold.
The Beta stepped back, startled.
Beta Wolf (whispering): “Impossible…”
Isabella’s voice was guttural, half‑wolf.
Isabella: “I’m not your prey.”
---
The pack gathered outside, drawn by the sound. Murmurs filled the courtyard.
Pack Member: “She’s shifting.”
Another: “No… not fully. It’s something else.”
Third: “Enigma hmph Just like the stories.”
Lucian stood tall, his voice carrying authority.
Lucian: “You see ,the enigma”
---
Isabella collapsed back onto the bed, gasping. Her claws faded, her eyes dimmed. She was human again, trembling, drenched in sweat.
Isabella (weakly): “I… I couldn’t hold it.”
Lucian (softly): “You don’t need to. The wolf came. That is enough.”
---
The Beta growled, but his voice lacked conviction.
Beta Wolf: “She’s unstable it's dangerous”
Lucian (snarling): “She will learn.”
---
Later, when the pack dispersed, Isabella sat alone with Lucian. Her voice was raw.
Isabella: “I don’t want to be a monster.”
Lucian: “You are not a monster, your are just rare. You are the bridge between worlds.”
Isabella: “Bridge?”
Lucian: “Human compassion. Wolf strength. Together, they make you enigma.”
---
That night, sleep claimed her in fragments. She dreamed of running through snow‑covered forests, her body shifting between human and wolf. She saw golden eyes staring back at her—her own, but wilder, untamed. She heard whispers in the wind: Enigma. Mate. Mother of heirs.
She woke with a gasp, her heart pounding, her skin damp with sweat. Lucian was there, watching her with steady eyes.
Lucian: “You dreamed of the wolf.”
Isabella (shaken): “Yes. It was me. And it wasn’t me.”
Lucian: “That is the enigma. Two souls, one body. Human and wolf, bound together.”
