As the car stopped, Brennon took off his jacket. I wanted to scream. But the surrounding doesn't seem in cooperation. We are like in a place where only the two of us exist. I immediately think of ways to protect myself no matter what. I hastily grab the car door and before I open it he said in a husky voice "Here put this on, you are chilling" He handed me his jacket. I was so embarrassed with myself that moment thinking so meanly about this man whose only pure intention was to help me get through the bad weather. "Thank you" is all that I can utter.
There was a long silence after that. And I was the one who broke it. "You can drop me off at the Bitter Sweet Cafe" , I said. "You really are cold?" he asked, confused. Maybe he thought that I would have a cup of coffee when I really looked like I came from a shower room. "No, I am actually renting a unit upstairs in that building." I replied. It's funny how the rain suddenly ceased. I bow to look at him inside his car and express my extreme gratitude for his gentleness and goodwill. "Okay then," he said. "It was nice meeting you, change your clothes afterwards and have a hot Choco drink or something to warm your body and keep you from colds" He said nonchalantly. I stood still outside and even waved my hand to show goodbye and respect for what he did while he slowly disappeared from my sight.
I don't know but I never noticed that I was smiling while walking inside to my apartment. "You seemed to enjoy the rain Ms. Eloise" I was surprised upon hearing it from Mrs. Smith, my old neighbor, I don't see her coming by. I was occupied by what just happened to me and I must admit I was both in terrible shocked and delighted that night. "Oh uhmm...I just have thought of what had just happened today Mrs. Smith '' I said. "You must hurry up changing your clothes else you might catch colds" Mrs. Smith said. "Thanks! yeah I will, have a good evening Mrs. Smith" I was in front of my unit then. "I always have a fantastic evening, Eloise," the old lady said, smiling back at me before she carefully closed her door so as not to create any noise.
I was inside my unit when I noticed that I was still wearing the jacket Brennon let me use. "Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!, I forgot to give it back to him!" I was baffled thinking of how disgraceful I am not to remember to return this person's jacket. Even when I was alone I felt the sudden burn up to my face. What an embarrassment it is on my part. I don't even have or even get his contact details. Now where on earth would I return this. I was so careless not to come to my senses. Sigh.
I heard birds chirping outside my room windows when I woke up the next day. I don't know but I felt so rested and lighthearted that morning. Maybe because of that good shower last night before I go to sleep. Its Saturday. I don't have a schedule of teaching at school. I actually don't get a schedule specifically on Saturday and Sunday. It was my reward to myself for working so hard for the whole week.
Schedule for today, bring my laundry at the laundry shop downstairs, this is what I love about renting a unit here. It was like a one stop shop living place. You go downstairs and you have access to almost everything you need, coffee shop, laundry shop, mini grocery, night bar, fine dine in, food stores you can choose from and shops across the streets. As I was putting all my clothes to be cleaned I picked up Brennon's jacket, I still don't know how to return this to him, But surely I will find ways to give it back to Brennon Miller, my knight in that one rainy evening. And I smile as I recall his generosity.
"Where have you been last night? You were so late that I worried so much about you" Regina asked Brennon as they were having their daily routine breakfast every time that Brennon was home. He looked at her. His Regina, she's the most amazing woman that he ever met. His high school love He still remembered very well the time she fell in love with this woman. He was not a good student. Not a typical obedient teen. He loved to explore things back then. Adolescence period. He joined almost every gang there is, just to show off his masculinity, he doesn't want to follow. He wants to lead.
A loud siren was heard from the school Brennon was in. It was the siren of the Police patrol car. There is a rampage around again between gangs. And it was in a violent and uncontrollable commotion. There had been throwing of stones and exchanging punches. Unfortunately it was not Brennon's day at all. He was being beaten by someone he didn't see coming from his back. He passed out and the next few hours that he woke up he was at his best friend's house, Kevin. "Ouch, it hurts! damn, careful you lady!" Brennon was shouting from pain. His face was in bruised. He had a black eyed too. And blood stain runs down to his school polo shirt. "Hey, don't shout at her, thank her instead that he was helping you with your wounds!" Kevin said while laughing. I knew he laughed at me because it was the first time that I was beaten and knocked out in a gang fight. "Sorry!" I gently said to the girl. "You knew her Brennon?, she was my cousin, Regina moved here three years ago to live with us and study because her parents got into accident and died" Kevin explained as Regina was like a statue looking at me while holding a damp face towel that she's been using to clean my wound and the blood stain that had already dried up. "Yeah, I often saw her at school, sorry to hear about your parents and thank you for helping me with my wounds' '"It's nothing, Kevin wouldn't help you anyways" Regina had a sweet feminine voice. She had long black curly hair, black round eyes, pointed nose, pouted lips that looked ready to welcome kisses and a fair complexion that suited her voluptuous physique. Its her lips that catches my attention with Regina. It was full. red and kissable. No wonder that I had this male fixation towards her face, and I felt something just bumped in my heart at that very moment. "Let me check your wound again and put some ointment on it" I was moved by Regina's voice. I don't know if she noticed how I stared at her, and I don't know how long I did that, but I felt a little blush on my face. "I think I can do it now I've gained my consciousness and it'll be uneasy for me to see someone else doing this kind of first aid to myself" As I hurriedly grab the towel and ointment that Regina is holding. She just smiled back at me as she stood up and said that she will just make some snacks for the three of us. After that day, Regina's face doesn't go away in my mind. And the rest is history.
"We don't have overtime, it just happened that I saw someone in the road under the bad rainy night and decided to help and give her a ride" I never lied to Regina. From the beginning when I married her, I promised her that lies will have no room in our relationship no matter what that is. "Give her a ride?" I knew Regina was trying to confirm that "her '' in my story. "Yup, its a girl or a woman, I don't know, I never looked at her that much I just saw her bathed in rain with her bag or briefcase, so I thought that her belongings must be so important that she hugged them tightly even if she's being soaked under the rainy evening" "Okay" It was Regina's affirming that there'll be no questions to follow. She never heeded about my jacket. And I forgot to tell her about it either. I will just get it from that woman if I have a routine near her place. And yes, She is a woman. I saw her face in a dim light at the rear mirror inside my car. She was although young to look at but I sensed that she was already in her legal age as mine. And though I said that I never noticed the woman that much. I lied. For the years that I've been with my wife, this is again the first time that I adored such beauty.
