Chapter 1
Sheryl’s POV I knew something was wrong the moment I sat down at the dinner table. The air felt heavy, charged with an electricity that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. My father, Alpha Theodore, sat at the head of the table, his massive frame radiating a cold, dangerous energy that made me want shrink into my chair. Alexandria, my stepmother, delicately cut her roast, while Victoria - her daughter - scrolled through her phone, completely oblivious to the tension. I caught Victoria’s eye for a moment, but she quickly looked away. Not that I expected anything else. She had never considered me a real sister. My thoughts drifted, as they often did, to my mother. I was just twelve when she died, defending our pack during a brutal nighttime attack. I remembered her fierce determination, her body shielding me from attacking wolves, her last words a desperate command for me to survive. The memory of her blood, the way she fell protecting me, still haunted my dreams. My father had never forgiven me for surviving when she didn’t. “I have an announcement,” Theodore’s voice cut through my memories, sharp as a blade. I looked up, my heart suddenly racing. Something in his tone warned me that whatever was coming wasn’t good. “Sinclair Astrid, the Alpha of Ravenmoon pack demands p*****t,” he said, his voice flat and devoid of emotion. “The debt I owe is substantial, and I have no means to repay him.” Alpha Sinclair. Even his name sent a chill down my spine. I had heard stories about him - a ruthless leader known for his cruelty, a wolf who showed no mercy. When my father’s eyes met mine, I knew. Something terrible was coming. I could see it in his cold gaze. “He wants something in exchange for canceling my debt,” Theodore continued. And then I understood. Me. I was the p*****t. “No,” I whispered, the word barely escaping my lips. Theodore’s nod confirmed my worst fears. “You will be sent to Alpha Sinclair tomorrow. You will pay the price for our pack’s survival.” Panic exploded inside me. All rational thought disappeared. I had to escape. I had to run. Anything was better than being handed over to a monster who would likely kill me or worse. I launched myself from the chair, my chair clattering to the floor. But Theodore was always one step ahead. Before I could reach the door, two of his strongest guards blocked my path. Strong hands grabbed me as I screamed and fought. “Please father!” I sobbed, all pride gone, pure terror consuming me. “I’ll do anything! I’ll be good, I’ll never cause you trouble again! Please don’t send me away!” But Theodore’s face remained a mask of stone. Victoria watched with a mixture of fascination and satisfaction, while Alexandria wouldn’t even look at me. “You’ll be ready tomorrow,” my father said coldly. “Alpha Sinclair will collect what is owed.” In that moment I knew my life was over. “Take her to her room, and stand guard outside. Make sure she doesn’t escape.” Theodore commanded, not even bothering to look at me directly. Guards surrounded me, their massive frames blocking any potential escape route. I felt my heart racing. The hallway seemed to stretch endlessly, the family portraits of proud alphas watching me with their painted eyes - judging, condemning. My bedroom door clicked shut with a finality that crushed my last remnants of hope. Hours passed. Every tick of the clock was a countdown, a brutal reminder of my impending fate. Sleep was impossible. My mind raced with images of Alpha Sinclair - stories of his brutality, his merciless reputation among werewolf packs. I couldn’t surrender. I wouldn’t. Slowly, quietly, I moved toward the bathroom. The bathroom window was wide enough for me to pass through. My fingers worked quickly, unlatching the window, pushing it open with minimal sound. The night air hit my face - cool, promising, filled the the scent of freedom. Without hesitation, I squeezed through the narrow opening, dropping silently unto the soft ground outside. My heart thundered in my chest, freedom was just meters away. The outer gate was close. I tiptoed carefully through the soft grass. Smelling my escape, tasting the possibility of survival. “And where do you think you’re going?” Victoria’s voice cut through the night like a knife. Cold and cruel. I froze. Slowly turning, I saw her emerging from the shadows, her eyes gleaming with a predatory satisfaction that sent chills down my spine. “You can’t escape,” she said, her voice dripping with malice. “If you run, Sinclair won’t just kill you. He’ll destroy our entire pack. Is that what you want?” I turned to face her, my body still trembling from the adrenaline of my failed escape. “You wouldn’t understand what it’s like to be traded like a piece of property.” Victoria stepped closer, “Oh, but I understand perfectly,” she replied, her voice a venomous whisper. “I understand that you’ve always been the problem in this family. The unwanted daughter. A constant reminder of father’s great loss.” “Oh shut up!” I shot back. Anger coursing through me. “You’re not even his real daughter, so you have no right to say that to me.” “I know.” her smile was wicked. “Yet he loves me more than he will ever love you. And that is why he gave you up to Sinclair instead of me. I am valued in this family, while you’re invisible.” I could feel my control slipping. The wolf inside me began to stir, a primal rage building with each word she uttered. “You call yourself the real daughter, but look at how you turned out,” she continued, circling me like a predator. “A debt p*****t. A disposable daughter that father couldn’t wait to be rid of. I bet Sinclair will…” “Shut the f**k up!” I yelled, my control finally shattering. The transformation happened in an instant. Bones cracked, skin rippled, and within moments, two wolves faced each other - one dark and powerful, the other leaner but no less fierce. Victoria’s wolf was larger, her coat a deep midnight black. My wolf was smaller, but carried the legacy of my mother’s bloodline - a fierce, determined spirit that refused to be broken. “You’re nothing,” Victoria’s wolf snarled through their mental connection. “Nothing but a mistake father wants to erase.” Then she struck - a lightening-fast attack aimed at my throat. I dodged, but not completely. Her claws raked across my side, tearing flesh, drawing blood. The pain was immediate and searing. We fought - a brutal, primal battle of teeth and claws. But Victoria was larger, stronger. Despite my skill, she was relentless - like she was fighting to kill. A final devastating blow sent me sprawling, a deep wound opening on my flank. Triumph gleamed in her eyes as she shifted back and called out, “Father! Sheryl tried to escape!” Moments later, I was dragged before Theodore. The pain of my wounds was nothing compared to the emotional agony consuming me. “How could you?” I screamed, my voice raw with pain. “I am your daughter! Your blood! How can you hand me over to Sinclair like some worthless trade? I won’t survive it there!” Theodore remained stone-faced. No emotion. No compassion. “You are a liability,” he said coldly. “Your existence has been nothing but a reminder of my greatest loss. It’s time to make yourself useful.” My mother. Always my mother. “Guards, take her out of my sight. To the medical room, if she’s willing.” Theodore commanded. “No…no, please… father please…” I begged. But the guards dragged me. They dragged me to the small medical room within the house, their grip rough and unyielding. Blood dripped from my wounded side, leaving a trail of crimson against the polished wooden floor. Victoria stood nearby, watching with a cold, triumphant smile that made my blood boil even more than the physical pain. The pack healer, an older woman named Margaret, worked silently. Her hands were gentle. Each touch of her healing salve sent a sharp sting through my wounds. “You’re lucky,” Margaret muttered, her voice low. “The wound isn’t deep enough to prevent your transformation or healing.” I said nothing. What was there to say? Lucky? I was being traded like a cattle to a monstrous Alpha, betrayed by my own family. Theodore stood in the doorway. His eyes never met mine, always looking just past me, as if I were a ghost he wished would disappear. “You’ll be prepared for Sinclair’s arrival tomorrow morning,” he said, his voice devoid of any paternal warmth. “Margaret will ensure you’re presentable.” The word “presentable” hit me like a physical blow. What am I? A flower vase? I screamed inwardly. As the healer finished bandaging my wound, Victoria couldn’t resist one final twist of the knife. “You should be grateful,” she whispered, leaning close enough that only I could hear her. “Most rejected daughters would have been killed long ago. At least Sinclair might find some use for you.” Her implication was clear and horrifying. I felt my wolf rise inside me, ready to tear that stupid look off her face. But I knew any further rebellion would only make my situation worse. The night passed in a blur of pain. I could hear the pack moving outside, preparing for tomorrow’s transaction. Whispers. Shuffling. The occasional bark of orders. No one came to comfort me. No one offered an alternative. As dawn broke, casting a pale light through my small window, I realized my fate was sealed. Alpha Sinclair would arrive soon, and my life as I knew it would be over. I closed my eyes, thinking of my mother. Would she be disappointed in me for not fighting harder? Or would she understand the impossible situation I was trapped in? The sound of approaching vehicles broke my moment of reflection. Sinclair had arrived.
