CHAPTER 1 - Encountering Misery
December 5th, 2021 Pranavi Mehta The night sky is beautiful by the numerous stars surrounding the full moon. The brightness from the moon illuminates its light on the glass window, making her tiny silhouette glossy. The soft breeze hit her waist-length wavy hair from the slightly ajar window, making her shiver in the chilly winter. Glancing at the lovely weather, Pranavi had an immense urge to have a hot coffee. Stretched her muscles with a light yawn, she looked at her mobile, '03:00 Am'. With a frustrating sigh, she murmured, "as usual, I couldn't sleep again." Since she couldn't fall asleep, she decided to make herself a coffee to relieve her thirst. As a coffee addict, she's used to having coffee irrespective of the time, and it's no different this time either. Making a messy bun with her hair, she turned on the music and strode to the kitchen, since the house was eerily silent, which wasn't to her liking. As she was brewing her coffee, she missed the presence of Shreya in the house and cursed, "Damn this girl! How many days does she need to return?" Soon, the rich aroma of the black coffee filled her nostrils, and a satisfied grin settled on her face. She took a sip and strode to the balcony to enjoy the serene street. Jumping into the swinging chair while covering herself with the thick blanket, she opened her laptop and began doing her assignments. As she's pursuing her dual MBA in Business Analytics and Finance Management from IIM university and is in the final year, her days were pretty hectic with her freelance jobs and studying, but she liked it. At least it was much better than living on the streets starving! Slowly, she drifted into sleep with her laptop in her lap, and soon it was dawn. As the clock hit 06:00 am, the alarm began banging in her ears, and she bounced off from her slumber. Quickly finishing her daily routine, she was dressed in a black jumpsuit with an olive blazer, paired up with her block heels, and had a high ponytail. With a dab of touch-up, she's ready to go. She grabbed her tote and placed her laptop in it while checking all the documents needed one last time, and a slight pleasing curve spread across her plump lips. While not stunningly beautiful, she's an average-looking girl with a height of 5'2 and a medium fair complexion with slight dimples. Her round brown eyes had a depth of an ocean that could hide numerous mysteries. As she was busy looking for her bike keys, the strong ring tone of her phone interrupted her, and without a doubt, she knew who it was. "Pranavi," Shreya mumbled in her husky voice, rubbing her eyes while yawning. "Yeah! Now you got the time to call me?" Pranavi queried while locking the house in a hurry as she glanced at her watch. "Don't you dare fight with me now? I'm already tired of all the drama in my house." A pout settled on Shreya's lips, remembering all the incidents that happened in the past week. "Gotcha. You okay?" "Hmm. By the way, is everything done with our project?" Shreya blurted out without thinking, making Pranavi's temper rise. "Wow! The almighty Ms. Shreya Chakraborthy remembered, it seems!" Sarcasm dripped off from Pranavi's tone since she was obligated to do all the work alone when Shreya suddenly went to her home. "Babe! You know my situation. Don't poke my faults now." A huff escaped Shreya's lips. "Oops. I'm not." "Ugh, girl! You're becoming more brazen day by day." "I know, and I need to drive. I'll let you know the result as soon as the meeting ends. Bye." Pranavi added and hung up with a smile. ... Rushing inside the office building, Pranavi checked her appearance to make herself presentable because she couldn't afford to lose the contract. As soon as she stepped onto the 30th floor in a hurry, she slammed herself onto a hard surface, "ouch." A murmur escaped her lips while her tiny hands softly rubbed her small nose. She raised her eyes to look at what was stopping her, and she was shocked beyond words as she saw the smug look of the President himself, aka Mr. Shlok Ahuza. In his usual dazzling navy blue suit, brownish touselled hair, neatly trimmed beard, grey eyes gazing at her keenly with a smirk. "Mr. Ahuza?" She was stupified for a second, not knowing whether she had offended him or not. In the next minute, she uttered a series of sorry's since she was at fault. Moreover, she and Shreya needed their contract because it was their primary source of earning money since their remuneration was pretty good. Without any response, he turned around, and she exhaled her breath which she didn't know she was holding. With a knock, she stepped into the office chamber and stood aside. But to her dismay, Shlok didn't give her any attention. She stood there awkwardly, not knowing what to do, while her hands clasped together in nervousness. Gathering her courage, she called, "Mr. Ahuza?" Seeing her futile attempts to please him, he was in a good mood while his lips curved upwards slightly. "Yes, Ms. Mehta?" He glanced at her and signaled with his hands to accept the seat. Soon, he was looking at the projected outcome of the app Pranavi and Shreya developed, and he was pleasantly satisfied with the result. Seeing his appreciative look, she relieved the unknown tension in her heart. "Nice work, Ms. Mehta." He added while closing the file and turning off the laptop. "Thank you, Mr. Ahuza. It was a pleasure working with you." She said in a neutral tone. Glancing at her with his sharp eyes, he asked, "Are you willing to continue working for us?" "Yes. We're looking forward to it." She said in a determined tone. With a nod, "That's great. My assistant will forward to you our latest requirements." "Thank you." With that, Pranavi stood up and was about to turn from her seat, but unfortunately, she collided with his assistant, and the coffee tray fell from her hands. The hot coffee spilled onto the floor and her hands. A burning sensation in her hands made her wince in pain, but she controlled the urge to scream. Biting her lips as hard as she could to withstand the pain, she muttered a soft apology. To her disappointment, his sister Prachi walked in and frowned in displeasure. "Don't you have any manners?" She shouted at Pranavi with furrowed brows, and Pranavi remained rooted in her place in a panic. A disgusted look settled on Prachi's eyes after glancing at Pranavi's ordinary clothes and appearance. "With what sort of people are you working, brother?" Prachi asked Shlok haughtily, making Pranavi feel small because she knew she couldn't afford to offend these people. Unknowingly, she clenched her fists upon hearing her taunts. "Let her go, Prachi. It's a small mistake," Shlok said, without giving any further importance to the situation. "How can you let her go directly? You're tolerating all of their mistakes. That's why they are behaving more and more insolently." Prachi taunted her brother in an annoyingly arrogant tone. "I'm sorry, Miss. I genuinely didn't see you coming." Pranavi apologized again by suppressing her anger so that she wouldn't lose the contract because it was a matter of their living expenses. Though they have earned enough to pay their fees for their final year, still, she’s not a fool to lose a 2 million rupees contract which will make their life easier. Moreover, she worked hard to earn it without a good night's sleep for several days. So, saying a little sorry in front of this huge sum of money wasn't a big compromise for her. At least, to some extent, she can tolerate it! Hearing her apologize, Shlok gave a warning look to Prachi to not overdo it, and Prachi finally humped while waving her hand in front of Pranavi to leave their presence. In all of this drama, Pranavi had long forgotten the sting in her hands. She pierced her nails tightly into her hands and left murmuring a series of curses, "damn it. Today is such an unlucky day." “What a b***h she is!” "Why the f**k did I not see her coming?" "Stupid Prachi, acting like a princess! How arrogant can she be for looking down on me? Hmph!!" When she was busy cursing, she didn't hear the shouts of Shlok's secretary until he appeared beside her. "Pranavi Mehta." She turned around with a questioning gaze when she glanced at the man panting heavily. "I'm calling you for a while," Daniel said in a huff. He's an average-looking man, 5'10 tall, tan-colored, slightly muscular with brownish hair. Gazing at the man, she politely added, " Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't hear you. Is there anything you need me for?" "Yes. Mr. Ahuza invited you to a meal." "What? Ugh, no, never mind. I'm good." Pranavi immediately blurted out. As she was not very comfortable being alone with Shlok because he seemed a bit weird to her. But surprisingly, he hasn't done anything to her in the last couple of years. Except for an occasional smile and handshake, nothing was out of the ordinary. Sometimes, she even thought she was misreading him. But his piercing gaze made her feel as if he liked her. Then again, his rude behavior always proved it wrong. She never understood the look in Shlok's eyes. So she always kept it only professional over the years. Moreover, it'd take an eternity for her to trust anyone! Now, upon hearing suddenly about the lunch invite, her immediate instinct was to reject it. Seeing the eagerness to avoid it, Daniel chuckled, "what are you afraid of, Miss? It's just a formal business party for closing the deal." "Um... is that so?" She asked, not following where this was leading to. "Yes, Ms. Mehta. Moreover, he said he was sorry for the event that occurred earlier in the office." "Oh. That's fine. I'm totally okay. It's actually my fault, by the way." She politely answered while her hands tightly grabbed her bag. "So, are you coming?" "No, tell him maybe some other time. I've some work to take care of for now. I'm sorry." Pranavi added, and took her leave without turning back as if running for her life! Daniel sighed, seeing her disappearing back. He had never seen her talking more than needed in the past couple of years. "What a weird girl. Anyone else would jump at the opportunity, but she tried her best to reject it." With that, he reported to Shlok, and he gave a curt nod without giving much importance to her! ... Soon, Pranavi reached her house and threw the laptop aside with a huff. She glanced at her lightly scalded hands, and with a sigh, she grabbed the ointment and applied it while blowing air to reduce the pain. Meanwhile, Shreya called her to know the result. As soon as Shreya heard what happened between Pranavi and Prachi, she became furious, and they started cursing together as if that'd relieve their anger. "Hey duffer, you know what, Shlok Ahuza kinda invited me for lunch," Pranavi said, remembering the events. "What? Seriously? Spit out the details!" The eagerness in her voice made Pranavi shake her head in displeasure. With a pat on her chest, she answered, "I declined. Though his secretary said it was a formal gathering, I'm not at ease without you." Hearing that, Shreya yelled while rolling on her bed, "Girl, when would you overcome your social phobia? Is it that difficult to face people for you?" Pranavi thought for a while and answered, "Ugh, I prefer being in my personal space, maybe." "Shut your nonsense with me. I'm seeing you for how long...? uh 9 years. You would always run away whenever someone was trying to get close to you. That's insane, girl!" "Ugh. I can't. It's just, ugh, I don't know, I couldn't express it properly." Pranavi drifted into her thoughts, but could she justify her actions? She can, but she won't because she doesn't think people will warm up to her! "Open up, duffer." "Nah. I'm good like this." "Stupid. Anyhow, I got your back. So, no worries!" "Exactly. Why do I need others when I have you, my drama queen?" "Ufo! By the way, I've good news, babes." Shreya quoted. "Are you coming back?" Pranavi asked, guessing that was the only good news for both of them. Shreya eyed the busy roads while answering, "Uh-huh. On my way to the airport." "Cool. Let's go out tonight then?" "Yep. It's been weeks since we've relaxed." "I know, darlz. I'll be waiting for you then. Bye!" Pranavi hung up while her lips curled, and sat on the sofa, looking forward to an exciting night! ... Pranavi and Shreya stood outside of the nightclub dressed in black bodycon dresses that hugged their curves perfectly and enunciated their beauty while their eyes crinkled in anticipation to wipe off their stress. It was their first time coming to such a high and mighty club, and they wanted to enjoy their asses off! The club appeared all flashy with illuminating lights, and all the high-end cars were parked perfectly in their spots, while the buzzing sound of music was heaven to their ears. With a knowing nod, they showed their pass to the burly bodyguards at the entrance and jumped in with a cheeky smile. With a glance at the insides, their mouths dropped in awe. They couldn’t believe their own eyes that they finally stepped foot in The Royal Club which was one of the most highly rated high-end clubs and mostly the famous people in M city would often visit this club. Quickly eyeing the empty chairs near the bartender arena, they hopped in and ordered their usual Tequila shots with lemon. They began tapping their feet to the music and swayed their hips in rhythm. After drowning themselves in five more rounds of shots they were beyond drunk but somehow, they were appearing to be steady despite the effects of alcohol. Shreya glanced at Pranavi, and yelled in her tipsy voice as the loud music wasn’t allowing them to talk slowly, “let’s hit the dance floor, duffer?” Hearing her, Pranavi gave a quick nod since she was already drowning in the effects of alcohol and she was carefree while her cheeks turned red. Soon, they were rubbing themselves off to the loud beats of music and were moving their bodies like crazy while humming the songs in between. Her eyes were intoxicated, her nose turned crimson red with the amount of alcohol she consumed and she was so lost in her world of dancing, and didn’t notice the disgusting glances of a sleazy old man nearby. Eyeing her slender figure with perfect proportions, the old man licked his lips and approached her from behind, and put his appalling hands on her making her halt almost immediately and jump in alarm. But the man’s grip was strong, and she was held in place. With a frown, her eyes roamed across the hall to find Shreya but there was no trace of her. Immediately panic kicked in her veins and she was struggling but it appeared as if she was rubbing herself on him while his breath was hitting her nape, making her feel as if insects were crawling on her skin. At the same time, Jwalin Oberoi came out of his private room with a cigarette in his hands and glanced at the scene in front of him. He couldn’t help but take a second glance at the girl who was young and in full vigor but was wasting her youth on such an old man. “Probably her sugar daddy!” He assumed and a coldness flashed in his eyes. He shook his head and cast a disgusting glance at her as if she had committed a sin. His jaw clenched in annoyance as he saw how she was pulling the old man towards herself as if she wanted more from him, and he shook his head since it was none of his business, and he left. Soon, Shreya came from the washroom and saw Pranavi was hugged by an old man and saw her struggling, but to no avail. Almost immediately, she ran to the floor and held the old man in her hands in a painful grip making the old man cry in pain. Shreya knew martial arts, which was an advantage to her. She pushed the old man away from Pranavi and hid Pranavi behind her, and kicked him in the knees, making him fall to the floor, and they left the club without wasting another second. “Babe, are you alright?” Shreya asked concern lacing in her tone and Pranavi nodded. “He didn’t do anything except hug me, and rubbed himself off me, not a big deal, although it felt disgusting,” Pranavi said while patting her hand on Shreya’s shoulder to not make her worry unnecessarily. Shreya gave a firm nod, and they headed to their house since their night was ruined at last, but they did enjoy it well. …
