Gabrielle’s POV The rain continued to pour as I stood outside the gates of Windsor Estate. My clothes were soaked through and my heart felt even heavier. The divorce papers were still clutched in my hand like a death sentence. I took a shaky step forward and the world tilted. A wave of dizziness washed over me. I pressed a hand to my forehead and told myself it was just the rain, the exhaustion, and the heartbreak finally catching up to me. Nothing more. I could not fall apart here. Not in front of the guards who had once called me Mrs. Windsor. Not where Charlie might see me break. With trembling fingers I pulled out my phone and called the only person I thought might offer comfort. My mother. She answered on the third ring. “Gabrielle? Why are you calling so late?” “Mom…” My voice cracked. “Charlie divorced me today. He said Bianca came back. That she was his first love. That I was just… a placeholder.” There was a long silence on the other end. When my mother finally spoke her tone was cold and distant. “Bianca deserves him, Gabrielle. They loved each other first. You knew that when you married him. You should stop standing in her way and accept the divorce with dignity.” Her words hit harder than any slap. “Mom… I gave him five years of my life.” “And now it is time to let go. Do not cause a scandal. The Windsor family has enough power to ruin you if you fight this. Be smart for once.” I could not breathe. I hung up before the sob escaped my throat. Tears mixed with the rain on my cheeks as I stood alone on the dark street. Even my own mother had chosen their side. I had nowhere to go. The luxury hotels I once frequented were out of the question. I refused to use any of Charlie’s money or cards. With what little cash I had in my purse I took a taxi to the outskirts of the city and checked into a cheap motel. The room smelled of stale cigarettes and damp carpet. The bed was small and the lighting harsh. It was nothing like the mansion I had called home for five years. I sat on the edge of the mattress and finally let reality crash over me. The tears I had held back all day came rushing out in ugly, broken sobs. I cried for the love I had poured into a marriage that was never truly mine. I cried for the future I had imagined. I cried for the woman I no longer recognized in the cracked mirror across the room. After what felt like hours I forced myself up and into the tiny bathroom. I needed a hot shower. I needed to wash away the day. The water was lukewarm at best but I stood under it anyway trying to steady my breathing. Suddenly the dizziness returned stronger than before. The room spun violently. I grabbed the shower curtain but it tore under my weight. My knees buckled and I collapsed against the wall. “Miss? Miss are you okay?” A frantic knocking sounded at the door. The motel manager had heard the crash. I tried to stand but the world kept tilting. “I am fine” I whispered weakly. The manager insisted on helping me to the bed. “You do not look fine. I am calling an ambulance.” “No please. I cannot afford..." But the dizziness overwhelmed me again and everything went black. I woke up to the sterile smell of disinfectant and the steady beep of machines. A hospital. The bright lights hurt my eyes as I tried to sit up. A kind faced doctor entered the room holding a clipboard. He checked the file and offered a gentle smile. “Mrs. Windsor…” he began before pausing and correcting himself. “Actually… Miss Gabrielle.” I nodded numbly waiting for the diagnosis. Exhaustion. Dehydration. Stress. Something simple I could fix with rest and time. “Congratulations” the doctor said warmly. “You are pregnant.” The world stopped. My hand trembled as it settled over my stomach. A baby. Charlie’s baby. Fresh tears blurred my vision. Fate had a cruel sense of humor. Just hours after the man I loved threw me away, life had given me the one thing that would bind us together forever. No. He had already made his choice. He had chosen Bianca. This child was mine to protect. I would never beg Charlie Windsor for love again, and I would never use this baby to tie him to a marriage he had already abandoned. If fate wanted me to become a mother alone, then I would become the strongest mother my child could ever have. The doctor continued speaking but his words faded into background noise. All I could focus on was the tiny life growing inside me and the terrifying realization that I was now completely on my own. This was not how any of this was supposed to happen.
