Chapter 3: The Midnight Meeting
At midnight, Lyra made her way to the forest and the ancient oak tree. It felt like an eternity as she waited, her heart racing with the wonder and excitement sparked by Asher's words.
When she finally arrived at the tree, he was there, leaning against the trunk with a relaxed demeanor, his gaze locked onto hers. His smile sent a delightful shiver down her spine.
"Hey," he said, stepping away from the tree. "I'm really glad you could come."
Lyra nodded, a wave of unease washing over her. What was he about to say?
Asher led her further into the woods, guiding her to a clearing surrounded by towering trees. The moon hung high above them, casting a bright glow on their surroundings.
"You know," Asher said, his voice taking on a serious tone, "I’m just like you. I’m a wolf, too."
Lyra's eyes widened in surprise. She hadn't seen that coming. "How is this possible?" she asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.
Asher smiled at her. "It's a long story," he replied. "But I promise I'll explain everything. My family has been wolves for generations. We've learned to control our transformations and coexist with the wolf inside us."
Lyra listened closely, captivated by Asher's tale. She had never met anyone like him, someone who truly understood what she was experiencing.
As Asher spoke, Lyra felt a strong connection to him. She realized she wasn't alone anymore; there were others out there like her.
Yet, as the night wore on, an uneasiness crept over Lyra. Something felt off. She could sense that Asher was withholding something from her, and she knew it deep down.
"What is it?" she insisted, her eyes narrowing. "There's something you're not telling me, isn't there?"
Asher's expression turned serious. "There's a lot I need to say to you," he said. "But it isn't safe to talk about it here. Meet me in the old cabin on the outskirts of town tomorrow night. I'll tell you everything."
Lyra nodded, anticipating. She knew that her life was going to change in ways that she could not imagine.
While walking back home, Lyra couldn't get rid of the feeling that she was being observed. She glanced around, but there was nobody.
The trees seemed to loom over her, their shadows reaching out far and wide in the moonlight. Lyra quickened her pace, a sense of dread creeping in.
She knew that she had to be careful, that there were dangers out there that she couldn't even start to think about. But she was determined to learn more about her new nature, to understand what it was to be a wolf.
The next night, Lyra strolled out to the old cabin on the outskirts of town. She'd been wondering all day what Asher had wanted to tell her.
As she walked up to the cabin, Lyra noticed Asher on the porch, his gaze fixed on hers.
"Hey," he greeted her as she reached him, getting up from his chair. "I'm really glad you're here."
Lyra smiled, with a shiver of nervousness. What was Asher going to tell her?
He guided her in, to a tiny room where there was a fire crackling in the hearth. The room felt warm and snug, full of old furniture which made it all the more charming.
"So what did you have to say to me?" Lyra asked, her interest getting the better of her.
Asher relaxed against a chair and inclined his head toward the other one. "Sit down," he instructed. "There is much that you do not comprehend about being a wolf," he went on. "About the pack, about the hierarchy."
Lyra leaned forward, her eyes on Asher's. "Tell me," she instructed.
Asher nodded. "The pack is a highly complex system," he said to her. "There's an alpha, a beta, and the rest of the pack. The alpha is the leader, the one who makes decisions."
Lyra nodded, taking it all in. "And the beta?" she asked.
"The beta is the second in command to the alpha," Asher said. "They help the alpha make decisions and uphold the rules."
Lyra's mind was spinning. She never thought about the pack order before, but it made sense.
"And where do I fall?" she breathed.
Asher's expression grew grim. "You're a wild card," he told her. "You don't belong to any pack, yet. But you have potential. You have power and strength."
Lyra's enthusiasm blazed. She'd never thought of herself as being able before, but Asher's words awakened something deep within her.
"What do you mean?" she asked, her eyes locked on Asher's.
Asher leaned in, his voice tight and focused. "I mean you could be a leader," he said. "You could be an alpha."
Lyra's eyes became wide with shock. Being a leader was not something she had ever thought about, but Asher's comments gave her hope.
But as she looked at Asher, she saw a glimmer of doubt in his eyes. His words, "There's more," "Something you need to hear."
A
beat skipped in Lyra's heart. What was it? Asher wanted to tell her what?
