Chapter Two.

1756 Words
Can love ever fail us? No, I don’t believe so. But, we can fail love. I know this because I failed it. Four years – it has been four long years but, it still feels like tomorrow. I still sometimes stare myself in the mirror and think if I made a mistake by falling in love with Silas Harrison? Maybe I did – maybe I didn’t. I don’t know – I am still confused. We both failed in love. He couldn’t trust me and I could make him trust me. He left me four years ago but, the wounds are still fresh. Maybe I would have moved on if he wouldn’t have blamed me for something I never did. Maybe I would have forgiven him. He said he loved me but, he still didn’t trust me. He still didn’t give me the chance to prove my innocence – what kind of love was that? Did he even ever love me? Maybe yes – maybe no – I don’t know. I still cry when alone. His words still haunt me. Cheater – you are a cheater. No, no – I am not, I want to scream it out. I want to tell him that he was wrong. He could have said that he doesn’t love me anymore but, no – he had to bruise my self-respect – something that I value the most. Self-respect and honor are something that you earn. These are the most precious jewels that a person has but, Silas didn’t care about it. He didn’t care about me. He ruined everything for me – he ruined my life. No matter how much I try to make myself believe that this was a dream – a nightmare. No matter how much I try to make myself believe that I never met Silas, I don’t know him. He was just a part of the nightmare. But I can’t escape the reality. I can’t forget what really happened. People say that past should be left behind. No, you can’t leave it behind – it was a very real part of your life. You can’t forget it. You can’t pretend that it never happened – especially when your past is as dreadful and as painful as mine. And anyway, who would want to forget a good past? No one – it is the hurtful memories that maybe everyone wants to forget. But, it isn’t easy. Bad memories will always be in our mind, they will always be the part of our lives – no matter how hard we try to forget them – we just can’t get rid of them till we die. Physical wounds – they can be healed but, verbal wounds – nothing can heal them. They are permanent. "All the members of staff are requested to gather in the conference room. Thank you." I snapped out of my thoughts when I heard a voice through the loudspeakers. I know what this means, one of us getting was getting dismissed. I'm afraid of losing this job. I've been working here, in Michelle's Hotel as a room server since last year. My best friend works here, she recommended me here. I was messed up at that time with my head tangled in bills. I had no other option but to apply for the job. I was lucky enough to get hired by the manager. I've been working really hard since then. "Did you hear that?" Charlotte, my best friend asked as she walked towards me. "Yeah." I sighed and put some customer's duffle bag in the luggage carriage. "I hate it," she said lowly, apparently last time her ex-boyfriend got fired. He broke up with her just after getting fired and snapped at her for engaging him with her all the time when he should have worked. Which was not true at all, Jake was just another lazy ass, bastard. I never liked him, he was a total prayer, and Charlie was naive enough to understand it. Charlotte McGill, my best friend from high school, we both were shy and highbrowed students. She is way too much naive and innocent. Her parents are – missing or dead – no one knows. Although everyone believes that they died. When she was fourteen, her parents went on camping, leaving her at our place. They never came back. Police searched for them but in the end, concluded that they went in the restricted area of the forest and were attacked by the wild animals. They never found their bodies though, which mean they could be alive. Charlie was heartbroken. She even tried to commit suicide. Fortunately, she was saved by my elder brother. After hundreds of visitors to the psychologist, she finally settled down with us. Last year she moved out, she bought a small apartment from her earning and her parent’s savings. "Hey, you are not responsible for what happened to Jake, okay? You did nothing." I told her. I laid my hands on her shoulder, "Okay?" I repeated myself. She forced a small smile, "Yeah" she mumbled. "Now let's go, before Elna come here to find us." She said and together we walked towards the conference room. As we were making our way towards the hall – I had this unsettling feeling – like something bad was about to happen. Conference Hall was as big as the main hall with the stage in the front. After a little while, other staff members walked in and soon the conference room was filled with all the staff members of the hotel. From the head chef to the security guards – all were present in the hall. After a few minutes of waiting, Elna, the manager of the hotel strolled in with a few more members of the staff and few unknown faces. Elna Trish is very beautiful and a polite woman. She looks in her early thirties but, I honestly never asked her age. She always acts nicely with the staff and always helps them through. I don’t think that there would be anyone that doesn’t like her. She steps up on the stage and stood in front of the microphone stand. She cleared her throat to gather everyone’s attention – soon the mumbling died and everyone stood quietly. "Good Morning, everybody – I'll only take a few minutes as the customers are waiting for your services." she smiled and cleared her throat. "Let's get straight to the point, shall we?" she continued. "These gentlemen, here, are the employees of the man who has recently bought this hotel.” She said. Gasps and mumbles were heard in the hall. I myself was stunned and a little happy. Why? Because Mr. Garfield, the owner or should I say the ex-owner of the hotel was the biggest pervert I ever know. He never missed the chance of hitting on us. I always tried to stay away from him. He was a really creepy man – I really hope that the person that bought this hotel would be much decent and easy going. "Mr. Evan, would you like to say something?" Elna asked the good looking guy. "Sure." He said and adjusted the microphone. "I'm not really good with speeches but I assure you that we'll try our best to make this hotel one of the world's best hotel and for that, we want your devotion and hard work. I hope we'll all get along just fine." he smiled. Some chuckles were heard while some of us clapped. Mr. Evans smiled and stepped away from the microphone. He was a mid-aged man. He had quite a personality. He looked like a nice person – let’s hope that he really is as nice as he seems to be. His phone started to ring, he took it out of his black suit jacket, "Excuse me." he said to Elna and mumbled something on the phone. After a few seconds, he put his phone back in his coat’s pocket. “The men that bought this hotel are two brothers. They have arrived. You all can meet them soon.” Mr. Evan said in the microphone. Everyone including me twirled around to look at the entrance. I was still feeling a little unsettled – I don’t know what it is – maybe it is a hunch – but, I think something bad is about to happen. Soon the door opened and three men walked in with their hands behind their back. They all were wearing black shades and their lips were pressed into a tight line. I frowned. For a second I thought that they were the new bosses but, when they stood quietly beside the door – I realized that they weren’t the new owners but, the bodyguards. “I thought they were the ones,” Charlie whispered. I chuckled and glanced at her, “I thought the same.” I replied. People were still mumbling around us. They all were waiting to see the new owners. Soon the door opened once again and two tall figures walked in. I am not sure if it is possible for us to skip our heartbeat but, I truly think that skipped it when I saw the two men making their way towards the stage. Suddenly everyone started talking loudly. Even after all the noises around – I could clearly hear my own heartbeat. I couldn’t move – only my eyes followed them. My fingers went cold and sweat appeared on my forehead. “Oh my God, Maria,” Charlie whispered in my ear and put her hand on my shoulder. She was surprised as well. My lower lip started to tremble. I couldn’t keep my emotions in. My knees felt wobbly and my head started to spin. I tried to turn towards the stage but, stumbled during the process. Thankfully Charlie grabbed my hand and helped me gain my balance. With wide eyes, I saw the two people that I never wanted to see again. Silas and Marcus stood on the stage – eyeing the crowd. As I said before – you can never keep your past in the past. It will come back in one way or another.
