The Lipstick Mishap in the Elevator
08:15 AM Su Xiaonuan was crouching in front of the freezer at the convenience store, shoving the last sandwich into her cross-body bag when her phone alarm blared like a bomb. A passing delivery guy was startled and dropped two sets of Jianbing Guozi. She apologized while rushing out, only to have her left stiletto heel get stuck in the drainage grate with a “crack.” “Damn it!” She tried to pry the iron bars with her bare hands, scaring the cleaning auntie into retreating with her mop raised. The crescent-shaped scar on her hand, pale pink from the effort, was visible as she finally grabbed her broken shoe and ran barefoot, with chives from the Jianbing Guozi clinging to her ankle. 08:27 AM “Wait—!” Su Xiaonuan squeezed into the elevator just 0.01 seconds before the doors closed. The iced coffee in her arms exploded as she jolted, the brown liquid streaming down her lace collar. She realized something was off when the mirrored walls reflected her panda-like eyelashes from the smudged mascara and the tuft of hair sticking out from the back of the man's head in front of her. “Mr. Gu, the quarterly financial report...” The assistant holding the documents stopped mid-sentence. Su Xiaonuan followed everyone's gaze and saw her lipstick drop onto the Italian handwoven carpet. The man stood in the mirror's reflection, his suit and tie impeccable, except for the abstract “red scarf” drawn on his chest with lipstick. “This is the executive elevator.” The deep voice chilled Su Xiaonuan, as she watched him pinch the stained fabric with tweezers-like fingers. She suddenly remembered the tea room legend—last month, Lisa from the publicity department spilled a latte on Mr. Gu's cuff and was now working in a mine in Africa! “If I can't afford it...” She glanced at the golden nameplate on his chest that read “Gu Chengxiao,” and beads of sweat formed on her forehead. “Shall I sing 'Grateful Heart' for you?” The mirrored walls suddenly showed an odd scene: the three executives behind Gu Chengxiao took out their phones in unison, while the cleaning auntie fished out a handful of sunflower seeds from her pocket. 08:29 AM “Twenty thousand for dry cleaning.” When this sentence floated out of the president's office, Su Xiaonuan was squatting outside, trying to glue her high heel back together. With glue all over her hands, she plopped straight into a potted plant upon hearing this. “Do I look like twenty thousand to you?” She peeked in, holding onto the door frame, as a pothos leaf dangled from her head. Gu Chengxiao looked up from his financial report, tapping his pen on the coffee stain on her collarbone. “Or, come to my office for two hours every day after work as a human rag.” A rumble of thunder rolled outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. Su Xiaonuan stared at the man slowly wiping the lipstick from his collar, suddenly recalling the “blood disaster” she had drawn from her tarot card reading that morning. 08:45 AM “Xiaonuan! You're famous!” Her colleague, Xiaomi, burst into the restroom holding her phone, while Su Xiaonuan was using the hand dryer to blow dry her underwear—her bra was soaked with coffee. The trending topic #Mr. Gu's Lockbone Strawberry Mark# was third on the hot search list, with a distorted picture of her face from the mirrored wall, showing her pressing lipstick against Gu Chengxiao's neck. The top comment screamed: “Does this girl plan to assassinate the president by making him too handsome to resist?” 09:00 AM Su Xiaonuan was hunched over her cubicle, revising design drafts, when she was suddenly overshadowed. Six black-suited bodyguards entered in a line, carrying a rack with her stained suit. The price tag on it clearly read 198,888 yuan for dry cleaning. “Mr. Gu says...” The lead bodyguard choked back a laugh, “If you pay in installments, you can use emojis to offset the debt.” She watched as he displayed his WeChat interface, where Gu Chengxiao's profile picture had been changed to her ridiculous photo with a pothos leaf on her head. 12:30 PM The TV in the staff cafeteria suddenly interrupted with an urgent news broadcast. In the footage, Gu Chengxiao was attending a ribbon-cutting ceremony with a band-aid on his lockbone. The host teased, “Is this Mr. Gu's latest fashion accessory?” “It's a new type of anti-wolf sticker,” he replied with a raised eyebrow, “specifically for workplace assassins.” Su Xiaonuan sprayed her tomato and egg soup all over the screen, and bursts of laughter erupted behind her. 06:00 PM As the rain pounded against the glass curtain wall, Su Xiaonuan huddled in the stairwell, munching on a sandwich. Her phone suddenly vibrated with a message from an unknown number: [Basement Level 1, Zone C, be a rag or end up on the social news]. She tiptoed to the parking lot and saw Gu Chengxiao leaning against the hood of a Rolls-Royce, twirling a lipstick between his fingers. The post-rain sunset shone through the atrium, casting shadows on his eyelashes but failing to hide the ridiculous red mark on his lockbone. “Choose.” He spun the lipstick, the body of which was engraved with "Compensation Item No. 001". “Whether to come home with me to mop the floor or...” Before he could finish, Su Xiaonuan suddenly pointed at the car roof and screamed, “The pigeon is about to poop!” Seizing the moment he looked up, she grabbed the lipstick and ran, only to crash into a giant wedding dress billboard around the corner. As Gu Chengxiao grabbed the back of her collar, the bride's veil from the billboard conveniently floated down over their heads. He raised his phone and took a selfie, the flash illuminating the pigeon droppings on Su Xiaonuan's nose. “Today's debt has increased.” He showed her the photo. “Compensation for mental distress.” 06:30 PM As Su Xiaonuan sat in the passenger seat, nibbling on her seventh bag of biscuits, she finally couldn't help but ask, “The doll hanging from your rearview mirror... doesn't it look like it's made from a tie?” Gu Chengxiao glanced at the twisted cloth doll. “A masterpiece from the marketing director last month. His daughter said it's a love charm.” As the car drove over the river bridge, the evening breeze lifted Su Xiaonuan's hair, which was stuck with chewing gum. She didn't see the fleeting smile on the man's lips, nor did she notice the design drafts hidden in the back seat—drafts filled with little butterflies on the edges, identical to the hairpin of the girl who had once saved Gu Chengxiao in an old photo.
