He didn’t say anything as we parked outside the apartment, as we climbed the stairs, or as he unlocked the front door and let me walk inside ahead of him. I was too scared of what he might say to probe just yet. I needed time to think it over, so I didn’t dare turn back around and ask him anything. But just as I was about to walk into the bedroom to take a shower, he spoke up. “Carmen,” he said in a low voice. I froze. Slowly, I pivoted on my heel to face him.
