I leaned back against the wall on the side of the building and closed my eyes. For probably the millionth time since I’d left almost two years ago, I wished I could go home. But I knew I couldn’t. I wasn’t welcomed anymore. I blew out a breath. Between work, trying to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads, and raising Lanie by myself, I was tired. I wished fervently that something would happen, something good.
“Are you alright?”
My eyes flew open to see Snapper standing in front of me. I straightened and nodded. “Yes. I’m okay. Thanks.”
He removed his sunglasses, watching me with those beautiful golden eyes. “Are you sure? You seem upset.”
“It’s nothing. I’m okay. Really.” I decided to change the subject. I didn’t need him feeling sorry for me. I could do that well enough
