Felicity put her arms round her neck and held her. “I love you, Miss Lindsay,” she said, “and I am loving everybody like you told me to do.” She thought for a moment and then she said, “I love you and Papa and Grandmama, because she lets me play with her jewellery and Jeannie and Jackson and, of course, Dragonfly but not quite as much as I love you.” Atayla laughed. “Thank you, darling, that is a very big compliment.” Felicity kissed her again. Then Atayla tucked her up and said, “Goodnight, dearest. God keep you and His angels watch over you.” It was something her mother had said to her as a child and, as she left Felicity’s room, she thought that God had watched over her and sent His angels to protect her and help her. Now never again in her whole life would she doubt that help
