Miami-Dade Memorial Hospital was all decked out for the holidays. At the nurses’ station was a tiny Christmas tree as well as a Menorah, and foil garlands draped the walls.

Christmas Eve had been miserable. Alex had been having a fun time with his kids, having taken them to see Santa and then for Happy Meals at McDonald’s when he’d gotten the call from an EMT that his dad was in the hospital—his mom hadn’t even been able to make the phone call. His ex-wife had been an angel and took little Ransom and Bryony, and he’d called in a favor from a friend to fly him to Miami. With that set up, he’d called his brother, then packed and headed to LAX.
