“You just don’t give up, do you?” asked JD.
“Not so much,” I confirmed. “Where’s your bike?”
“Don’t worry, it hasn’t been stolen. My ex-wife really send you?”
“Yes,” I said. I pulled my PI license out of my back pocket. “This isn’t exactly official. We’re neighbors, and Renee asked me to look you up while I was in this neck of the woods.”
Notice I did not say we were friends. No need to lie to Mr. Devereaux this early in our relationship. JD took the license from me, looked it over, then compared me to my picture. He opened his mouth to say something but thought better of it. Perhaps he felt it was too early in our relationship to say something smartassed about my picture.
