5: Meet Mr Gringall
GEORGE HENRY GRINGALL— commonly known as 'The Jigger'— was the youngest detective-inspector at Scotland Yard. He was forty-one, weighed twelve stones, had a small bristling moustache, a direct and spontaneous manner. He was no fool.
Gringall, if you remember, brought in Layell Jonas for a double murder, solved the Merreth case, caught Dromio Fenanzet— who had the best vice organization that has ever existed in this country— and wiped out the 'Marseilles' gang, a process which got him his last step.
Gringall believed in direct methods when possible. He could also be clever if necessary. He neither chewed gum, smoked curved pipes, had an income of his own, solved cases over a chessboard, asked crime reporters to give him a hand in solving cases, or looked under the edg
