A few more steps and I would be out of danger. I would be on the side road and heading for home. The massive oak trees made plenty of shadows and would hide my departure as I turned to the right and headed up the pavement.
I decided that nothing would stop me from getting home. I would stick to the side of the road unless a car came along. Then I’d just step into the brush or hide in the ditch. I had been embarrassed by my attire before, so what was the big deal now?
My plan worked quite well. When I saw headlights approaching, I just got a few feet off the road and waited. I figured that most drivers would be watching where they were going in the darkness and pay little attention to what lurked in the shadows.
