Lillian felt funny in her stomach as she glanced about campus, eyes roving through the flocks of students heading every which direction—“He’s not here, you know,” Tara said, licking the side of her ice cream cone.
“Huh?”
“Lucius doesn’t have classes today.”
Oh. Lillian ducked her head, scuffing her feet, kind of embarrassed at being caught looking for him. It wasn’t on purpose. She just . . . she was just naïve, she decided. Dumb to think that she might be the first girl he’d taken up to that roof, the first person to show his spot, to tease and smile at like that—there were probably droves of others. Ordering sweets, seated under the stars, those lights—it was dreamy but it wasn’t . . . special, was it? Not to him.
“Just admit that you like him,” Tara giggled. “
