Standing on the front steps of the old house, Harlan handed Adam the last peanut butter sandwich.
“What am I supposed to do with this?” Adam asked.
“Eat it,” Harlan said. “I imagine you’ll work up an appetite, climbing that mountain.”
Adam rolled his eyes. He’d meant, he didn’t have a bag to carry it or the bottle of water he’d just refilled from the last jug. He mashed the sandwich, squeezing it into his coat pocket. “Are you sure up the mountain is the only way to reach someone?”
“Feeling lazy?” Harlan asked, grinning. Then he relented. “No, I’m not one hundred percent sure, but it seems our best bet. The river would lead us somewhere eventually, but there are also mountains between us and somewhere in that direction, and there’s a good chance you’d have to climb at least one of
