Chapter 13Water. A perfect pool of water, reflecting both the red stone and the blue sky. A tiny cataract spilled down the rock to fill the pool, tinkling a sweet, musical tune. The water was cold. Sweet. Refreshing. She bathed her arms and face, filled the canteen. A resurgence of hope and confidence lightened her feet as she scrambled back down to the main canyon to return to her companions.
Colene stirred, sitting up as she approached. “Time to go, isn’t it?” The girl exhaled a gusty sigh. “I fell asleep and dreamed of water. Geez, I’d love to have a cold soda right now.”
“Would cold water do?” Fran held out the canteen. Colene looked at her suspiciously, as if she doubted Fran’s sanity.
