Truth

Samantha’s pov I dressed up in a simple green shirt and black pants to meet with Axel for a golf game. It was his third visit to our kingdom after our engagement. I didn't move to Axel's kingdom despite being engaged. Being royals, we were expected to follow a certain etiquette. Living together before marriage was frowned on, but he often visited us. After tying my hair in a high ponytail, I checked my reflection. I thought I looked good. After applying my favourite pink lip gloss, I went to the lobby where he was waiting for me. His eyes lit up as soon as he saw me, and my smile widened. He stood up, his eyes twinkling like two golden stars as he awaited me to accept the bouquet he brought. “Thank you,” I said, grinning from ear to ear as I accepted it. “I love white lilies.” He smirked. “I know, and I brought you a little gift.” He took a little red box from his backpack and opened it. My lips parted. It was a gold necklace with a white lilly pendant. Tiny white diamonds sparkled on the pendant. It was simply a timeless beauty. “Oh my,” I whispered as I traced it with my fingers. “That is so pretty.” “Do you like it?” I looked at him, my heart fluttering. “Of course! I love it!” “May I?” I nodded my head and turned around so he could put it on me. When the cold chain brushed against my skin, I traced it, happy to receive such a sweet gift. He didn’t have to get me gift, but he did. He liked me enough to pay attention to my favourites. How sweet. I stopped regarding his sweet gestures as platonic and accepted them as signals of endearment. It had been quite sometime since my heart had started to lean towards him. The desire to give him something he too would adore arose in my heart. I thought about it for a while. But what did I know about what men liked to receive as a gift? They are such strange souls. I sighed and looked at the pendant. I truly loved it. “Where did you get this?” I asked. “That’s a custom order from a jeweller.” My lips curled into a lopsided smile. “You got it custom-made for me.” He chuckled. “Yeah,” he said, as he finished clasping the necklace around my neck. “I thought it would suit you.” “This guy is perfect,” Luna remarked. I smiled. How did I get so lucky? He was the kindest, most considerate man I had ever encountered. And with that perfect face and body, he was everything a girl could ask for in a life partner. Although we weren’t fated mates, he ended up being my fiancé. If that wasn’t luck, I didn’t know what to call it. “You look so beautiful,” he said. I looked at him over my shoulder, locking my eyes with him. For a moment, I experienced so many new emotions. My heart raced, and my stomach felt queasy. “Thank you,” I said. He stepped back and sucked in a breath. “Shall we?” We went to the golf course in the palace premises. I watched as he picked the golf clubs. He was incredibly handsome, but I never told him that, while he never failed to remind me I was pretty. He gave me a golf club. “Axel,” I said. “Yeah.” “Did anyone tell you that you’re handsome?” “Yeah,” he said, checking the rest of the golf clubs. “My mom tells me that.” My lips quivered into a smile. “Not your mom. I mean… girls? Did any girl call you handsome? Did anyone other than your mom say it in front of you?” He turned to look at me and raised an eyebrow. “Uh, I guess a couple of classmates said that when we were in highschool.” “Oh, really? I didn’t know that,” I said. We hung out everyday back then and even dated for about a year. I knew the girls in our school thought he was drop-dead gorgeous, but most of them regarded him as unapproachable. So hearing that was a tiny surprise. She shrugged his shoulders. “Hmm, I didn’t think it was important. They just thought I looked good sometimes.” Sometimes? I smiled. Perhaps he wasn’t aware of how handsome he was. “You are handsome, Axel,” I said. “And I am not saying this because we are engaged now. I mean it. All the girls at school thought you were attractive.” A smirk curled at his lips. “Yeah? Wow. I didn’t know.” I nodded my head. “You were the prince, so most of them were kind of reluctant to approach.” He laughed, picking his bag up. “Well, that doesn’t matter to me. I don’t care what they thought. I only cared about one girl.” “One girl?” I asked, frowning. He got into a relationship with me, but I never thought he actually cared back then. He looked at me. “Yeah, you. Why else do you think I asked you to be my girlfriend?” My lips parted upon realising he probably cared more than I thought he did. I studied his face. “You cared?” He chuckled. “Why are you so surprised? Of course, I cared. I still do.” A frown wrinkled my face. He cared… that couldn’t mean he had feelings for me… right? He started to walk away. I followed him. Should I ask? “Nope,” Luna said at once. “But I want to know. Ana and Lina told me that they thought he had feelings for me. I didn’t think it was true, but now I have a feeling they were right,” I said. “And if it is true, how long has he been in love with me? Did I hurt his feelings by breaking up?” “You are thinking too much,” she said. “Hey, would you like to go first? Or should I go?” Axel called out, interrupting my conversation with Luna. “You go.” The thought was disturbing me. “Axel?” I said, frowning. “Yeah?” he answered, not looking my way as he prepared to swing. “Do you like me?” He swung his club, but it was a fat shot – something that never happened to him. He looked at me, shocked. “What? Of course I like you. I always liked you. We were friends for so long.” I shook my head. “No… do you like me… more than a friend?” He stared at me for several seconds, and I stared back. I needed answers. “Lina and Ana say they think you liked me even when we were in college. But we were on our separate ways because we both were looking for our mates, right?” He just stared at me, and I just couldn’t read his expression. “Well, I understand that you might like me a little bit more now. We are engaged. I also like more now…” A tiny smile curled on his lips, and he slowly shook his head. “Sam…” he said and sighed. I frowned. “Tell me. I am right, aren’t I?” He closed his eyes, heaved a deep breath and started to scratch his head. His reaction was worrying. Was I wrong the whole time? I walked towards him and held his hand. Tilting my head, I looked deeply into his brown eyes. “Axel? Was I mistaken? I want to know the truth.” My heart pounded in my chest. Hurting someone I cared for was the last thing I wanted to do. And if my actions had hurt his feelings in the past, I wanted to know. “The truth? You want the truth?” I nodded. “Please. I am your fiancée now. Tell me.” “I love you, Sam. I love you so much that it hurts.” I felt like someone shook my soul. He was in love with me. “I have loved you since way before I knew what that meant. I realised I had deep feelings for you the day you shifted. I was bummed when she didn’t recognise me as your mate, but I thought if you realised we could truly love someone who isn’t your fated mate, you would be with me.” “But I didn’t,” I mumbled, suddenly regretting the breakup. He snickered. “That’s in the past now. Now you are mine. You are my chosen mate.” I didn’t know what to think. “I am so sorry,” I said, and he only laughed harder. “No, it’s fine. I am happy,” he said. “I want to make up to you.” I felt guilty. What was the point of the breakup? Neither of us met our destined mates. He smirked. “You can do that.” “How?” “By mating with me,” he said, the mischievous smirk still etched on his face. I blinked… mate with him? Well, that would happen sooner or later… “I… yeah… I’ll mate with you.” His mischievous expression suddenly softened. “What?” “Yeah, get it, girl,” Luna cheered me on. I shrugged my shoulders. “I will mate with you. It will happen anyway. So what's the harm?” I noticed him gaping at me. “We can mark each other after the wedding.” “Whoa, wait… mark each other? Are we seriously talking about… s*x?” I raised a brow. “Well, yes. You love me, right?” “Yes,” he agreed reluctantly. “So why are you so nervous?” He sighed. “But… your parents… in the Palace?” It was my turn to smirk. I pretended to tuck a strand of hair behind my ear and ran my hand down my chest. “Where do you suggest we mate? In the woods?” He gaped at me, as though he couldn’t believe his ears. “I did not expect that.” I chuckled. “Hmm. I think mating is out of the question for now. You, apparently, aren’t ready yet.” His jaw dropped. Snickering under my breath, I closed his open mouth with my index finger and laid a soft kiss on his cheek. “I am also new at this, so I am not in a rush. But since you are going to be my husband, I can talk like this to you.” I winked at him and went to swing the ball. It was my turn. *** After returning to the palace, more serious discussions started. The discussions were about merging both kingdoms and about holding an Alpha conference. “We have a lot of work to do before merging the kingdoms. The wolves aren't ready for that yet.” “True. However, it could be beneficial to start working with the leaders of both kingdoms. If our parents don't object, let's conduct an Alpha conference. It could be beneficial. I believe it will create a platform to solve feuds between different packs and create unity among everyone. Ruling one large kingdom would create more problems. We should know how to tackle them. The easiest way is to create unity among all the wolf packs.” I nodded my head. “You're right. We should ask our parents. I think they will agree.”
