Chapter 4Iola put Lucy to bed and the child chattered all the time saying precocious things that Iola realised had come from a gossiping old Nanny and the other servants.
She was obviously an extremely intelligent little girl. At the same time there was something rather pathetic in the fact that she was not like an ordinary child, but more like a voluble grown-up who had no companions of her own age.
She was just getting into bed when she said Iola,
“Why do you believe in fairies?”
“Because they are exciting and beautiful little creatures who can tell us lots of precious secret things that people who live in a world of trains and machinery do not know.”
Lucy considered this for a moment.
Then she said,
“Fairies can’t go on trains, can they?”
“I am sure they would not want to,” Iola
