Chapter 4Iola put Lucy to bed and the child chattered all the time saying precocious things that Iola realised had come from a gossiping old Nanny and the other servants. She was obviously an extremely intelligent little girl. At the same time there was something rather pathetic in the fact that she was not like an ordinary child, but more like a voluble grown-up who had no companions of her own age.
