I called Coop as soon as I was up and moving, beating him to the punch. He laughed when I pointed that out, then suggested we meet somewhere for breakfast. “Since, from what I remember, all you keep around are bagels.”
“Pretty much,” I agreed. I told him I’d pick him up in half an hour and we’d go from there.
I’d forgotten it was Monday, and people were going back to work after the holiday weekend. The morning traffic, plus an accident, slowed my drive, so it was closer to forty-five minutes by the time I got to Coop’s motel. He was waiting outside, and he smiled broadly when he spotted my car. As soon as he got in, he gave me a kiss, then asked, “Where are we going?”
