NAYEK SPRANG FORWARD and grabbed Zaina by the arm.
She protested, “Hey, what’s going on?”
But he didn’t reply. He dragged her down the gangplank, pushing her in front of him. There were a number of people on the quay, but none of them spoke up. In fact, most of them looked away in the manner they had done when Zaina had turned up with bruises on her face. Because matters between a man and his wife were his business and one didn’t interfere.
Nayek pushed her up the road to the Silver Gull. People in the street gave them a wide berth, again without attempting to help. Zaina wasn’t sure she would help. Everything about Nayek’s appearance said trouble.
