He walked through the Square. On the other side he came into a narrow street, and half-way down the street, on his right, he saw an arched opening. At the bottom of the passageway, forming a cul-de-sac, was a public house. It was an old place with leaded windows, and an antique sign swung above a gothic door which formed the entrance. Kerr thought that it looked rather like a church which had been turned into a pub. The idea amused him. He turned into the cul-de-sac, went into the public house. The inside was as amusing—as strange—as the exterior. The saloon bar, in which Kerr found himself, was a long room, "L" shaped and with a low ceiling. At the end was an alcove. The place was crowded. There was a low hum of voices and a miasma of tobacco smoke hung on the air. Kerr went to the end
