“I have been doing great, Mom.”
Her eyes opened, looking empty as usual. Although she was physically there in front of me, it felt like my mother’s spirit had left her body. She wasn’t moving although her chest continued to rise and fall as she breathed.
“I really want to tell you something.” I took her hand, gently rubbing it. “Remember that girl I told you about?”
I waited as if she would reply, but she remained motionless.
“Well, turns out that she’s not really pregnant. She lied.” I looked down at my mother and saw her blink emotionlessly.
“I know, Mom. I did some stupid things to her too. But faking a pregnancy is just twisted. It’s just so wrong.”
