Doing laundry ideally should have involved detergent. Maggie settled for the shortest hottest water cycle the washing machine had. It made no difference if the fabric of the pants faded or discolored. The object was to get them reasonably blood free so Kurt could put them back on. The cycle took twenty-five minutes then she put them in the dryer. That took another half hour. Bill did call her back. The best he could manage for transport was to drive one of the battered SUV’s the clinic owned to collect them himself. He’d bring some extra medical supplies, but they would have to meet him on the street corner, a block away from the hotel. As Maggie hurried back to the hotel room, mostly dry pants over her arm, she wondered how much weight Kurt could feasibly put on his injured leg. Maggie
