CHAPTER TWOSandra let herself out through a door that led to the yard at the back of the house, which opened onto the Mews.
She knew that, while the other servants would be having their morning break in the kitchen, that there was always a footman on duty in the hall.
It was very different from the routine at The Priory where there had been only two or three old servants to cope with the whole house and, if anybody rang the front door bell, they waited for a long time before it was answered.
Now under her stepmother’s new organisation everything was very much more efficient but, Sandra thought, much more restrictive. Even so, she knew that when she was out of the house no one would worry about her.
At the same time she had no wish to be questioned as to where she was going.
