The abuses didn’t end that night. The guards took Violet to the lower level of the jail for several nights and tormented her mercilessly until they were finally ready for the screwing to begin. No one knew about these get-togethers except a small cadre of men who weren’t about to spill their nasty secret. The abuse might have gone on for weeks, but on Friday morning, when it was time for Violet’s weekly shower in the ladies bathhouse, the matron in attendance had a screaming fit about the marks she saw on Violet’s body.
