The silence in the room is almost suffocating. After finishing organizing my things, I have nothing left to distract myself with. Time seems to have stopped, leaving me with my thoughts and the weight of what is about to happen.
I walk to the window, crossing my arms over my chest, and stare at the cloudy Chicago sky.
A soft knock on the door makes me jump. I turn abruptly, my heart racing for an instant before realizing it’s not him.
The door opens slowly, and a female figure peeks in. It’s the woman who welcomed me the night before when we arrived—well-groomed and discreet. She wears a dark uniform with a pristine white apron. She looks at me with a gentle smile, though there’s a kind of silent understanding in her eyes.
