Chapter 28
Catherine came awake slowly, and the first thing she realized was that she was in a half lying down and sitting position with her hands bound in front of her. The unforgiving cold floor seeped through her skin and straight into her bones. Her head pounded furiously, and the left side of her face felt swollen. Her knees were pulled almost to her chest and there was a pain in her side as if she’d been kicked there. She tried stretching her legs out but they didn’t get very far.
She tried opening her eyes to get her bearings, but a piercing light had her cowering from it and turning on her side. She brought her hands up to cover her face to protect her from the harsh light.
