On Saturday, Tab went to see Mum by himself.
He didn’t usually anymore. It was too hard, the pain of losing her without quite losing her too sharp. But every now and then he figured he should make the effort, because she’d been Mum for years, and maybe she wasn’t Mum-Mum anymore, but she was still…you know. Mum.
It made sense. It did.
Jon wasn’t there when he arrived, Eddie dropping him off at the hospital entrance with a paternal look and a squeeze of the shoulder, but Nurse Aggie was, and she took him into the locked ward this time. It was always quiet in the locked ward—the result of drugs to keep everyone calm—but Mum’s little room was a beacon of warm light, and Toby Gibson, one of the mental health team that overlooked Mum’s care, was sitting in the visitor’s chair.
