A couple of days had passed, but I had never heard a word from Nana Luisa. I was getting more and more agitated as Ares kept pushing me to sign the divorce papers.
I am running out of excuses to stay. I have no bargaining chip, so we could at least come up with a compromise. He's really driving me over the edge.
"Aagh!" I groaned while pulling my hair in frustration. I'd been creating scenarios inside my head. Trying to figure out a way out of this place together with Mira, but none came.
I wanted to just straight up argue with Ares. Fight for my right as her mother. But I know I am at the losing end.
I have nothing. No one. I didn't stand a f*****g chance against him! Against them...
He could just kill me, and no one would even bat an eye. Damn it!
"What are you still doing here?!" Sofia suddenly hissed out of nowhere, snapping me out of my pessimistic thoughts.
"What do you care?" I glared at her, wanting to claw her face so badly. Maybe that way, I could let off some steam.
"Why are you dragging this out, huh?" She squinted her eyes at me, disgust evident on her perfectly made-up face. "Are you still hoping Ares would change his mind?" she snapped.
"Dragging this out?" I chuckled humorlessly while holding her gaze. “What? Do you expect me to get out of the picture just like that? You think I owe you a clean break? A gift-wrapped ending so you two can finally play house without the mess?”
She frowned, speechless for a while before she started laughing like she had just lost it. I clenched my jaw as she doubled over in laughter. I don't see anything funny.
"You still don't get it, do you?" she mocked. "Poor, Camilla..."
"He. Never. Loved. You," she emphasized each word, as if making sure I understood what she meant. "This," she gestured her hands in the air.
"This isn't marriage. It was all a game. You've been played, Camilla," she smirked. "You've been played. Hard. And you've lost. Now if I were you, I would just accept my defeat and walk away with whatever dignity is left in you," she preached, feigning concern even though her voice was dripping with unmistakable sarcasm.
I was so close to punching her in the face. I would have already done it if I weren't worried Ares would throw me out immediately if I did.
Instead, I took a deep breath to calm myself down. I tried so hard to hold on to my rapidly slipping patience and sanity.
"Get lost," I hissed between gritted teeth. "Who do you think you are, huh? I'm still his wife! You're just the vet! Now, why don't you go back to the stables where you belong?"
"How dare you?!" she growled, throwing her hand in the air to slap me, but I quickly caught her wrist.
"Why?" I raised an eyebrow while looking her dead in the eyes. "Did I hit a nerve? You have no business meddling between me and my husband." I made sure to emphasize the last word.
I watched as her jaw dropped. A few seconds passed before she was able to collect herself. She chuckled after pulling her arm away from my grasp. Then her quiet snickering slowly gave way to full-blown laughter. She looked like she had completely lost her damn mind.
"How pathetic," she muttered under her breath while still giggling. "You're still in denial, aren't you? Are you really that stupid? Do you want me to spell it out for you?"
"I've no time for you," I hissed, turning my back on her, but she grabbed my arm before I could take a step away.
"Oh, no, no," she chuckled. "You're not getting away. If I need to hammer it into that thick skull of yours, I will, so you would understand."
She tugged my arm, making me turn back to look at her. If I punch her in the face, will that shut her up?
"Ares doesn't love you," she stated firmly. "He wouldn't."
"Do you know why?" she smirked, carefully watching my reaction, but I didn't give her any.
I kept a straight face while matching her gaze. It wasn't so hard knowing she would only spout bullshit.
"He loves me," her eyes twinkled at the thought of her claim. "You know, we planned everything from the start," she said, confirming my suspicions.
"I was with him every step of the way," she was smiling stupidly when her face suddenly hardened as if she just tasted something bitter in her mouth.
"Knocking you up wasn't a part of the plan, though," she spat. "That little spawn of yours shouldn't have been in the picture!"
I almost gasped. How dare she talk about Mira like that? I seemed to have lost it. My patience finally snapped. The next thing I knew, my fingers were already buried in her hair.
"Aah!" she screamed as I pulled her hair, wagging her head in the process. "Let me go!" she scratched my arms, trying to pull me away from her, but I only grabbed tighter.
"Shut up!" I growled. "Shut the f**k up!"
She can insult me all she wants, but she has no right! No right to speak ill of my innocent daughter! She has nothing to do with all this fiasco. I will not let her, not even her father, drag her into this mess!
I will protect her with everything that I have.
"Stop it! Camilla!" she screeched, but I didn't stop despite the stinging in my arms where her nails had been digging.
I ignored her wailing and just kept on pulling her hair. She had already lost her balance and fallen on her knees, but I still kept going.
"What the hell is happening here?!" I heard Ares yell, but it barely registered in my rage-filled mind.
The next thing I knew, strong arms were wrapped around me, pulling me away from Sofia. I thrashed, trying to pull myself free, but he was strong. His arms tightened around me to the point of pain, making me wince.
I was breathing heavily as the gravity of what I did dawned on me. s**t.
He's going to throw me out now, isn't he?
"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Ares snapped.
"Ares!" Sofia cried, still sprawled on the floor. She looked up at him pitifully. Her tear-stained face almost made me laugh. Now she has something to cry about. At least she didn't have to resort to lies to make me look bad in Ares' eyes.
"Aah!" she whimpered dramatically. I rolled my eyes in disgust.
"It hurts!" she clutched her stomach, curling her body forward.
I frowned as I felt Ares become rigid behind me. His arms loosened up, making it easier for me to slip out of his grasp.
"Ares!" she looked up when he still didn't move. "The baby!"
I gasped. Realization slowly kicked in. What the hell is happening? This couldn't be...
No. I shook my head. Sofia called him again, and he reluctantly stepped closer to help her.
"Please! Take me to the hospital!" she cried hysterically.
I can feel the blood slowly draining out of my face. This must be one of her crazy antics.
I stood there, rooted to the ground as I watched Ares pick her up, then he hurriedly walked out of there while calling the driver's name.
No. I shook my head again. She can't be pregnant. If she is, then it must be another man's baby!
I swallowed the lump in my throat while replaying Ares' reaction in my head. No...
